The creativity of paper artists knows no bounds, and just when we think we’ve seen it all, another artist emerges with something truly extraordinary. These words perfectly describe the paper wigs and headpieces crafted by the artistic duo Asya and Dmitriy Kozin.

Since embarking on their journey as paper artists, this duo crafted everything from wedding dresses to historic costumes using nothing but paper, but their Baroque wigs transformed them into a huge hit on Instagram. Unlike most paper artists, they only use plain white paper, and there’s a reason why they opted for this medium.

“Asya and Dmitriy Kozin believe that white paper allows for them to accent form and conceal secondary details… The versatile white paper is used not only as a tool but also as a concept which helps to express the historical process in a symbolic fashion,” reads the duo’s official website.

In addition to recreating Baroque and Rococo wigs, the duo’s paper art takes things to a whole new level by incorporating countless elaborate details. If you pay closer attention to their wigs you’ll notice everything from flowers, ships, and swords hiding within.

Many artists use paper as their medium, but they do it in different ways. While some simply paint on it, others are painting and drawing with paper instead and creating something truly extraordinary—including the renowned paper artist Yulia Brodskaya.

Brodskaya has a background in graphic design, but she’s been interested in papercrafts from an early age. She’s been mastering her edge-glued paper technique, similar to quilling, for an entire decade and found a way to put a twist on the traditional way of making paper art.

Brodskaya always starts her process with a detailed sketch which allows her to have a clear idea of her artwork. Once that’s done, she moves on to gluing separate pieces of paper one by one and takes a couple of days or even a couple of weeks to finish up single artwork, depending on its complexity and size.

In addition to using different kinds of paper, Brodskaya utilizes all sorts of special tools, ranging from tweezers and cutting knife to cocktail straws and wooden toothpicks. Paper is all she needs to create amazing portraits and nature-inspired cut-outs that have to be seen to be believed.

The world of paper art is full of surprises thanks to the amazing artists who are pushing boundaries with their creations. The masterminds behind the paper art studio Judith + Rolfe are doing just that with their art that draws inspiration from nature, geometry, and architecture.

Before turning to paper art in 2016, Judith studied architecture at Cornell and worked in this field for an entire decade. Her background in architecture and interior design came in handy when she decided to turn to paper art, and helped her stand out amongst the other artists.

Her intricate 3D creations utilize quilling paper and are mostly inspired by botanical flora, taking the form of beautiful, colorful flowers. Judith works closely with her husband Rolfe, but he’s mostly a problem-solver, logistics, and ideas guy who prefers staying behind the scenes.

When it comes to her creative process, Judith makes her art by gluing paper strips to each other. This task requires a lot of patience because everything needs to be precise and aligned, but she enjoys each and every step of the journey. Cutting, shaping, and gluing paper over and over again can become repetitive, but she finds the process relaxing and the final result is truly amazing.

Paper artists put a lot of patience, creativity, and hard work into each of their creations, and the final results are truly awe-inspiring. That’s also the best way to describe the work of Lisa Lloyd, the British paper artist, who uses nature as her driving force.

Lloyd started her creative journey as a graphic designer and animator and even ran an animation company before turning to paper art. She still draws inspiration from other creative industries, but mostly uses paper art to express herself, and makes her sculptures entirely from paper.

In an attempt to make her creations colorful and lifelike, Lloyd is always on the hunt for paper with interesting finishes and colors. Some of them look incredibly realistic, while others are more abstract, and Lloyd’s incredible attention to detail is what makes them so extraordinary.

She uses paper to express the beauty of nature, and that’s why her sculptures often take the form of flowers, animals, and objects we can encounter while exploring nature. While scrolling through Lloyd’s Instagram page, you’ll notice many of her creations are inspired by birds since they represent a true challenge for every paper artist.

Paper art can take many different shapes and forms and every artist has something new to bring to the table. That’s certainly the case with John Ed De Vera, whose paper cutout creations inspired by popular culture became a true sensation on Instagram.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxGfllVnRgb/

De Vera describes himself as a “multidisciplinary designer, with a penchant for lettering, paper-cutting, and experimenting with different and new art mediums”. He explored several different art forms before pursuing paper art and finding his true calling with 3D paper cut illustrations, which attracted over 100,000 followers to his Instagram page battery_full.

Hi kicks off his creative process by drawing each of the elements on a bond paper, before transferring them on special color paper and cutting them by hand. He often uses several layers of paper because they allow him to create shadows and texture necessary for the 3D vibe.

Many of his illustrations are inspired by popular TV shows, movies, and recording artists, but that’s not always the case. De Vera also crafted many paper cutouts that celebrate the beauty of nature and everyday life.

Paper art is a medium that has been around for centuries, evolved beyond its original scope to encompass anything from fashion to huge installations. Lacy Barry knows best. A multi-faceted paper artist she cuts, folds, and glews colorful pieces of paper, creating unique props that have outgrown their humble beginnings.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CBd16_XnPim/

Born in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada, Barry draws inspiration from her childhood memories and natural surroundings. “I like nature and being in nature, that always rekindles some wonder and induces calm feelings,” she shared in an interview with Ballpitmag. “Being present is pretty important, oddly something I must remind myself to do quite often, it’s in these moments I feel most human and connected to life.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CEEJu3tnE5y/

As such, her work often incorporates themes from nature, with paper flowers often sprouting in magnificent form. Now based in Berlin, Germany, Barry’s work has attracted clients like Coca-Cola, Gucci, Uniqlo, and Bombay Sapphire.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CAvtMXdnT7H/

“Art is the vehicle that allows me to make the most sense of the world around me when it mostly makes no sense at all,” states Barry. “It’s the language aside from the English and sometimes French and German language I can communicate in and sometimes the best language to really explain what I am thinking & feeling… visually of course. I am certain I would not function properly if I couldn’t make art.”

Every flower must grow through dirt, says the old saying. But Stephanie Redlinger’s flowers don’t abide by the rules. Made out of crepe paper, they take after their natural surroundings with the added bonus that they never wither away.

Based in Boulder, Colorado, Redlinger first paper flowers were her wedding bouquet and her husband’s boutonniere. But her botanical paper art isn’t only restricted to bouquets and includes flower crowns, mushrooms, and even wild berries that look good enough to eat.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B7_SgICBtnp/

“I do copious amounts of research on my subjects both before and during the making process,” explained Redlinger on her website, “preferably by studying live plants and flowers, but also from online image searches and combing through books and magazines.”

When she isn’t crafting paper flowers, Redlinger might be found working out in the garden (naturally!), joining her husband in chasing their two young kids and our dog around the house, or reading a good SciFi book.

Show her some love on Instagram (you know she deserves it!)

It’s not every day that we get to see two of our greatest passions – paper art and fashion, that is—interwoven into each other. So imagine our excitement when we came across Asya and Dmitriy Kozin’s paper couture. Using white paper that is folded, cut, and glued with incredible precision, they create anything from wedding dresses to paper masks.

“Our creative process always begins with making sketches of our ideas, or even writing them down and discussing them together,” the paper artists explained in an interview with Arctic Paper. “Then we research the subject and start the actual work. We may change something in the process, but in most cases, we know what we want and move towards our goal. It is great to be completely absorbed in the project and to work around the clock.”

Recent projects include marvelous paper wigs that were presented at the exhibition “Modern costume of the ХХ century”, in Moscow, and was later incorporated into a Dolce & Gabbana fashion show. These wigs, as well as other paper creations, draw inspiration from fashion history, and more specifically, the fashion of the Baroque era.

“I think we long for something long-forgotten, as popular culture puts too much emphasis on technical progress and efficiency,” explained Dmitriy. “This is why we love the Baroque era. The value of those wigs were primarily aesthetic, they were notably uncomfortable to wear, but they were also wonderfully beautiful and exquisite, not necessarily practical or having a powerful message. I think people are so tired of special effects.”

Take a look at some of their paper fashion statements in the gallery below:

A fragment of a wig made for the museum complex Doberlag. This project is called “Paper Heraldry" for a reason. After all, every detail reflects one of the aspects of the life of German nobility and aristocratic culture of the past. We are pleased to be part of the recent history of the Doberlag castle and look forward to the opening of the exhibition "We cover the table. A harbinger of the Dohna Collection in Doberlug“, to which our project is dedicated. Фрагмент парика, изготовленного для музейного комплекса до Доберлаг. Этот проект неспроста носит название “Бумажная геральдика”. Ведь здесь каждая деталь отражает одну из сторон жизни немецкой знати и аристократической культуры прошлого. Мы рады стать частью новейшей истории замка Доберлаг и ждём открытия экспозиции „Wir decken die Tafel. Ein Vorbote der Sammlung Dohna in Doberlug“, к которой и приурочен наш проект. #asyakozinadmitrykozin #paperart #asyakozina #artpractice #arts_gallery #galleryart #artprocess #castle #artsculpture #instagallery #artpost #artphoto #artprojects #gallery #castles #schlossdoberlug #schloss #baroque #baroquewig #wigart #contemporarysculpture

Many paper artists are drawing inspiration from nature and trying to craft life-like flower creations and Tiffanie Turner is one of the best. Her paper flowers look so authentic that it’s difficult to believe they’re not real.

Turner worked as an architect for over 15 years before discovering her true calling. She started a career as a botanical sculptor and took the art of paper flower making to new heights. She even teaches classes on this subject and shared step-by-step instructions in her book The Fine Art of Paper Flowers.

It takes between 250-400 hours to complete each of her pieces, and she dedicates a lot of time to studying the scale, texture, and color of each flower.

Her creations are mostly inspired by flowers and plants because they’re an “easy in” for people thanks to their familiarity and accessibility. “I am forever moved by the specimens found in nature, the dynamism of a flower on the stem and in the vase, changing with the season or by the day, here one month then gone for the next eleven,” explains Turner on her official website.

If you’re a huge fan of paper art, creative duo Zim&Zou will make you love it even more. They use paper to craft colorful, outwardly sculptures that look straight out of our wildest dreams.

Zim&Zou is composed of Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann, two artists from Dordogne, France. They joined forces after completing their graphic design studies and started experimenting with paper because they had easy access to colorful paper sheets.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMOUFdShWa4/

Zim&Zou claim they find paper inspiring due to its versatility, infinite range of colors, and unique textures. They use paper to craft intricate and colorful sculptures, shaped like zeppelins, forest homes, castles, and other whimsical flying objects and buildings.

While discussing their paper art with Adobe Create, Zim&Zou described their designs as “very intricate and time-consuming”. They crafted visuals, window displays, and installations over the years, and their main goal was to tell a unique story with each of their creations.

As such, her work often incorporates themes from nature, with paper flowers often sprouting in magnificent form. Now based in Berlin, Germany, Barry’s work has attracted clients like Coca-Cola, Gucci, Uniqlo, and Bombay Sapphire.
