While skin tones are straightforward, it’s a completely different story when it comes to skin’s undertones. Knowing your skin undertone will help you choose the best foundations and concealers shades, and create an overall more balanced makeup looks. There are three types of undertones: cool (blue or pink), warm (yellow or gold), and neutral (a mixture of warm and cool). This is how to identify yours.

Put On a White T-Shirt

Wearing a white piece of clothing in bright natural light will bring out your undertone. If your skin looks pink or rosy by comparison, you’re cool-toned. If your face looks more yellow, your undertone is warm. If you pull off both stark white and cream without looking pale, you may have a natural undertone.

Your Reaction to the Sun

Sun exposure can reveal your undertone too. If you burn easily, you have cool undertones. If you tan easily, you have warm undertones. And what if you burn and then tan? You probably have a neutral undertone.

The Color of Your Veins

If your veins in and around your face and neck appear blue, it’s a sign of cool undertones. But if your veins appear green against the skin, you’re warm.
