We get it—when you’re scooping out that buttery green goodness from an avocado, the pit usually ends up as food waste. But hold up! Before you flick it into the trash or compost bin, you should know that avocado stones (yes, that’s what the pit is technically called) are surprisingly useful—and potentially money-saving. In fact, gardening experts are encouraging folks to save their pits instead of ditching them, and for good reason.

Let’s dive into why you might want to hang onto your avocado stone—and how it could turn into a lush indoor plant or even a future avocado tree (patience required, of course).

Why Save Your Avocado Pit?

1. It’s a free plant.
In an era where a single potted plant can set you back $20 to $50, why not try to grow one for free? An avocado pit is the perfect budget-friendly seed—because it’s literally leftover from your snack.

2. They’re surprisingly easy to grow.
Growing an avocado plant from a pit isn’t as complicated as it sounds. With just a jar, some toothpicks, and water, you can sprout your own indoor avocado tree. Plus, it’s a fun project for kids, roommates, or anyone who loves watching something green take shape from scratch.

3. It’s great for the environment.
Repurposing your avocado pit instead of throwing it away is a small but impactful step toward reducing food waste. According to sustainability experts, every little action helps when it comes to mindful consumption.

The Simple Guide to Growing Your Own Avocado Plant

Ready to give your pit a purpose? Here’s how to get growing:

  • Remove and clean the stone
Gently rinse off any remaining flesh without removing the brown skin—this outer layer protects the seed.
  • Determine the top and bottom
The top is the slightly pointier end, and the bottom is flatter. The roots grow from the bottom, while the sprout grows from the top.
  • Suspend it over water
Use 3-4 toothpicks to suspend the pit over a glass of water with the bottom submerged. Keep it on a sunny windowsill and change the water every few days to prevent mold or rot.
  • Wait for roots and a sprout
In 4–8 weeks, you should see roots form and a sprout emerge. Once it’s 6 inches tall, snip it back to encourage growth.
  • Pot it up
When the roots are thick and the sprout is leafy, plant your seedling in a pot with good drainage and soil. Keep it in bright light and water it regularly.

Will You Get Avocados?

Here’s the honest truth: While your tree might eventually bear fruit, it can take 5–13 years—and some indoor trees never produce avocados at all. But even without fruit, your plant still earns its keep with glossy, lush leaves that brighten up any room. And if it does fruit? Congratulations—you’ve just grown an avocado-producing plant from a kitchen scrap.

A Pit with Potential

So the next time you’re enjoying toast, tacos, or a smoothie bowl topped with avocado, think twice before you toss the pit. Whether you’re aiming to reduce waste, flex your green thumb, or just enjoy a new hobby, saving your avocado stone is a low-effort, high-reward move. With a bit of patience and care, you might just end up with a thriving plant—and a story to tell every time someone asks, “Is that an avocado tree in your kitchen?”

Avocado, often referred to as a superfood due to its high nutrient content and healthy components, has found its way onto many tables around the world. Avocados are particularly healthy and have become indispensable due to their health benefits and unique flavor. They have been associated with weight loss as part of a balanced and healthy diet.

Source of Healthy Fat

Avocados contain monounsaturated fatty acids that can help reduce levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and increase “good” cholesterol (HDL). Additionally, the nutrients in avocados can strengthen both the heart and the circulatory system, and they have antioxidant properties that contribute to heart health. They are particularly healthy because they contain a lot of saturated fatty acids, potassium, and B vitamins, and they are an excellent source of vitamins such as vitamin K, vitamin E, vitamin C, and B vitamins like folic acid and vitamin B5, as well as minerals like potassium and magnesium.

Choosing and storing avocados correctly is very important to preserve their taste and nutritional value. When buying avocados, it is advisable to prefer those with the stem intact, as it helps to preserve the freshness of the fruit and extends its shelf life. Avocados without stems are at a higher risk of rotting quickly and may face the risk of mold and rotting.

Tips For Ripening

If the flesh of the avocado is still firm and can be slightly pressed with a finger, it should be left to ripen for a few more days. Once at home, the avocado should not be placed in the refrigerator but stored at room temperature. To soften an unripe avocado, store the fruit in a dark and non-humid environment.

There is a trick to accelerate the ripening of an avocado. Newsit suggests obtaining a paper bag from your local supermarket’s grocery store. “Place the avocado in the paper bag, making sure it is not torn, along with an apple or banana,” Newsit advises. Apples and bananas emit ethylene, a natural gas that accelerates the ripening process. The paper bag traps the ethylene around the avocado, speeding up its ripening. Close the bag and leave it at room temperature. Check the avocado daily, as its ripening may take from one to three days, depending on its initial condition when purchased from the supermarket. This method is completely natural and effective, without the use of chemicals or other processes.

To prevent avocados from rotting, place them side by side without touching each other. If the avocado lacks a stem, applying pure olive oil to the pit cavity can help keep it fresh for a longer time.

Proper preparation of avocados is crucial. One common mistake is not washing the avocado thoroughly under cold water before cutting. If the skin of the avocado is not washed with water before cutting, toxic chemicals and pesticides can end up in the food. This washing advice applies even to organically grown avocados, as they can also be contaminated with bacteria.

Many consumers try to remove the round pit with a sharp knife from the flesh of the avocado. The pit of the avocado is very hard, causing the knife to slip, and sharp blades can cause painful injuries to the fingers or hand when cutting avocados.

To prevent a cut avocado from turning brown, it is recommended to store it without removing the seed. Alternatively, after cutting, rub the surface with lemon juice and wrap it in cling film to store it in the refrigerator to prevent browning.

The avocado pit itself can be utilized. The avocado pit is full of antioxidants and fiber. It can be kept and used as a powder in smoothies or muesli. Alternatively, an avocado plant can be grown from the pit.

Avocados are one of the simple pleasures in the world. Between avocado toast and guacamole, we can’t get enough avocados. But what we don’t love about them is how short of a period there is between when they’re rock hard and too mushy. We bet you didn’t know you can freeze avocados to make them last longer. Here’s how to do it.

Whole Avocados

  1. Cut the avocados in half and remove the seed. Then scoop it out of the peel.
  2. Brush the avocado halves with lemon juice. This will keep them from browning.
  3. Tightly wrap the halves in plastic wrap and make sure there isn’t any room for air. This includes the spot where you removed the seed.
  4. Place the halves in freezer bags and press out the air, zip them, and put them into the freezer.
  5. To eat the avocado, take it out of the freezer and let it thaw.

Mashed Avocados

  1. Slice, seed, and scoop out the avocados into a bowl. Add lemon juice.
  2. Mash them up to your desired consistency.
  3. Place them in a freezer bag, press out the air, and zip them up. Put the bag into the freezer.

It’s avocado season, and the international obsession with these fatty fruits (yes, they are fruits) has led to culinary innovations across the world. New trends in healthy eating have made avocados a staple food because of their taste, substance, and nutritional value. Beyond just adding avocado to a salad, it can be the star of its own dish. Here are some easy, avocado-based snacks that you can make for yourself at home.

Guacamole

This hearty Mexican dip is easy to make and requires few ingredients. All you need is some onion, tomato, lime juice, and of course, avocado. Some people add garlic, cilantro, and even corn. We recommend making homemade tortilla chips to go with it.

This ideal breakfast with avocado is easy to make. After halving avocados, crack an egg into the hole in the center of each. Garnish with tomatoes and green onions (or bacon and cheese if you want to indulge), and then bake in the oven until the egg is cooked to your liking.

Avocado Chips

It doesn’t seem like it would be easy, but avocado chips are simple to make. Simply mash avocado until it has a smooth and even consistency, and season as you see fit. Then spread and flatten the mixture on a baking sheet and cook until they are crisp.

If you’ve noticed avocado milk on the shelves and wanted to try it, you probably want to know what it is first. Avocado milk is made from oat milk and freeze-dried avocados. This recipe results in a creamy, bright green drink full of vitamins and nutrients found in avocado.

The company that makes Avocado milk purchases the imperfect avocados that can’t be sold in grocery stores, thus reducing food waste. The brand claims that they are paying 20% more than the market rate in order to benefit the farmers because these imperfect fruits typically cost less because they aren’t pretty enough to be sold for full price.

The brand does other things in order to stay environmentally responsible. They are planting over 100 new avocado trees each year and use rainwater on the farms. This means that you can try this delicious novelty drink and not feel bad about any aspect of it.

If you can’t seem to get enough avocados, perhaps it’s time to plant your own tree. While it takes patience and dedication, all you need to get started is the pit from the avocado you just ate. You can grow the plant indoors or outside if you live in a warm climate. Here’s your step by step guide on how to grow your own avocado tree.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_lrRi6AFHK/
  1. Start off by washing the seed and remember which end was on top and which was the bottom.
  2. Poke a toothpick in the center of the seed, tucking it about 1/4 to 1/2 inch into the seed. Then poke two to three more toothpicks into the seed so the toothpicks are distributed evenly.
  3. Place the circle of toothpicks over a or glass filled with water, with the bottom end of the avocado seed suspended in about 1 inch of water, leaving the top end open in the air.
  4. Place the glass somewhere warm and away from direct sunlight and add enough water so about 1 inch of it is covering the bottom end of the seed. Change the water every four or five days to get rid of bacteria. The roots will grow from the bottom of the seed, and in about eight weeks a slender seedling should emerge from the top.
  5. When the seedling reaches 6 or 7 inches tall, cut the stem in half to allow the plant to grow.
  6. When the seedling has several leaves and thick roots, plant it in potting soil in a 10-inch-wide pot with drainage holes. Leave the top half of the seed exposed above the soil line and water the soil until water runs from the bottom of the pot. Water whenever the soil feels dry.
  7. Prune the tree regularly and every time it grows 6 inches, cut back the top two sets of leaves. When the plant is 12 inches, cut it back to 6 inches, when it reaches 18 inches, cut it back to 12 inches, etc. When the tree grows, place it in larger pots.
  8. In the summer, fertilize with a fertilizer with nitrogen and zinc. Don’t fertilize it during the winter because growth is minimal.

Baked Avocado
