What you wear is important, But many guys aren’t sure how to style them selves. Use this simple and straightforward guide and every guy can look great without spending too much time worrying about their image.

It Starts By Having Confidence In Yourself

Fashion doesn’t begin with selecting clothes. It starts with you. If you want to look great, you need to feel great. That means having confidence in who you are and having a purpose and direction for the style that you want to show off.

You might want to consider adopting a mentor who can guide you through this process. We aren’t all naturally confident with fashion, but we can all learn to be.

Your Clothes Must Fit Properly

The most important part of selecting what you want to wear is knowing that “fit is king.” This is simple and obvious, and yet people still ignore it.

If something doesn’t fit you properly, it can’t look good on you. You shouldn’t even accept free clothing that doesn’t fit you simply because it will never look good on you. Sure, an oversized garment may be adjusted to fit, but if you can’t get something adjusted – don’t buy it.

Don’t Follow Fashion

The exception to this rule is if you want a career in fashion, but for the rest of us, following fashion trends is a bad idea. Why?

It costs a ton of money to keep up with fashion. It means that your wardrobe ends up out of fashion very quickly. It is a much better idea to adopt a timeless classic men’s style instead. That way, you only shop when you need to shop and not when the season changes.

Choosing A Classic Style Is Easy

Don’t know what a classic style is and don’t have anyone on hand to ask? It’s easy to find. Go and find a bunch of pictures of guys from 50-75 years ago.

Sort them into a group of guys who look great and those that don’t. Then take the group of guys who look great and ask “would this look work today?” Every time that you say “yes,” you’ve identified a classic style.

Take Care Of Your Clothes

This might seem silly, but clothes only look great when they’ve been cared for properly. You need to spend a little time reading the labels of items that you buy and talking to the people you buy them from to determine the right care regimen for each item of clothing.

The good news is that if you care for your clothes they will last longer and need less frequent replacement and that saves you money in the long run.

Choose Hard Wearing Fabrics

Silks may look awesome, but they won’t last very long if you’re wearing them all the time. It’s best to build your wardrobe around materials that will last.

Cotton and denim are great examples of materials that you can wear 100 times or more without having to replace them. By all means, add a little luxury to your wardrobe, but try to keep the majority of your clothes in long-lasting fabrics, your wallet will thank you for it.

Buy A Good Suit That Fits You

A suit is a jacket and a pair of pants that is made from the same fabric. Sure, there are options that involve waistcoats, but keep things simple.

Choose a suit that has been in style for the whole of the last 50 years. Get advice on this from a tailor if you have to. Make sure that your suit fits perfectly in all the right places.

If you don’t wear a suit often, make sure that you have your suit adjusted at least once a year so that it continues to fit when you do need it.

Choose The Right Clothes To Go With Your Suit

The first thing a man needs to go with his suit is a light-colored dress shirt. This ideally should be white, but blue is OK if you really don’t want to wear white.

You also need a simple, solid tie. That is a tie that is one color and is, say, a burgundy or a dark green.

This means that your suit is going to be fine for any occasion from a wedding to a funeral. A cartoon tie might seem fun, but it’s embarrassing at a job interview and an epic fail at a funeral.

Quality Beats Quantity

All too many people end up with a wardrobe full of clothes and still feel like they have nothing to wear.

You can avoid that trap by focusing on quality over quantity. Only buy clothes that you absolutely love and that are built to last and which go easily with other items in your wardrobe. That “classic style” makes this much easier than chasing fashion.

This means you’ll find it easy to dress, easy to feel great and you won’t end up with a closet full of stuff you never wear.

Ditch Your Worn Clothing

If your clothing is stained, worn out or distressed (even if it’s artificially distressed), it needs throwing out.

Sure, light jeans with rips and artificial wear patterns might be in fashion for a week every 20 years or so, but in general, they make you look like a teenager, not like a man.

Men wear confident clothing that looks new and well cared for. They don’t dress like an extra member of Def Leppard.

Sort Out Your Footwear

Running shoes for adults are worn when you go running. Shoes are one of the easiest ways to convey that you know what you’re doing with your wardrobe. There are plenty of classic casual designs that are comfortable, but exude maturity and style better than running shoes could ever do.

Belts And Shoes Must Match

If you wear a black leather belt with formal pants, then you should be wearing black leather shoes to match them. This is vital and something so many people get wrong.

It’s so important that employers admit that making the mistake of brown shoes with a black belt can prevent someone from getting a decent job. Is that a good thing? Probably not. But we don’t make the world, we just try to live in it.
