Now that it’s warming up outside, chances are you’re thinking about exercising outside. Between the sun on your skin and the fresh air, working out outside during the summer is a joy, but it can also be dangerous. With the heat comes dehydration, heat stroke, and heat exhaustion, which are things that shouldn’t be taken lightly. But if you know how to work out safely in the heat, it can be an amazing experience. Here are five things to keep in mind when exercising in the heat.

Keep Hydrated

On a hot day even if you aren’t exercising, staying hydrated is essential. We suggest brining a water bottle with you when you head outside for your workouts and drinking sports drinks to rehydrate and replenish.

Light Clothes

Not only should you wear light fabrics like cotton or sweat-wicking materials, wear light colors to reflect the sun.

Sunscreen

This should go without saying, but anytime you’re outside during the summer, make sure you’re wearing sunscreen. For workouts outside, you’ll need a waterproof one that’s at least SPF 50.

Time of Day

Avoid working out outside from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. because it’s the hottest part of the day.

Know Your Limits

If you start to feel dizzy, tired, or nauseous, those are signs it’s time to take a break. It’s imperative to listen to your body when you feel like something is off.
