How to Enjoy the Holidays While Sticking to a Healthy Lifestyle

The holidays are one of the hardest times of the year to stick to a healthy lifestyle. Christmas cookies, ham, hot chocolate, donuts, eggnog, and latkes—some of our favorite foods are served during the holidays making it hard to resist temptations. While it’s okay to indulge every once in a while, if you’re trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, follow these tips.

Be Aware of Portions

We’ve all been there—filled our plate at holiday parties with all of the dishes. Just because you’re eating healthier doesn’t mean you can’t try everything. When you make your plate, for rich foods, keep the portions smaller and load up on vegetables and green salads.

Get Moving

Sticking to a workout routine during the holidays is really difficult, so instead of worrying about it, just move as much as you can. Walk whenever you have the choice between walking and driving.

Stock Your Home With Nutritional Foods

Even though you may not be in control of what you eat outside of your house, you can make better choices while at home. Stock your home with wholesome foods like fruits and veggies, so when you’re stressed you eat those instead of junk food.

Keep Hydrated

It’s common to confused hunger with thirst, so next time you feel hungry, drink a cup of water. To make your water more exciting, add fresh fruit to it.

Make Sleep a Priority

Adults should be getting seven to nine hours a sleep a night. When you don’t sleep enough, the hormones that signal when you’re hungry are negatively affected making you more likely to crave sugary foods and to snack.
