Heat and wipe away

Use a hairdryer to melt the crayon wax. Wipe it off with a cloth with a little dish soap. Microfiber cloths are particularly useful, but remember that the crayon will adhere to whatever cloth you use, so a paper towel might be a better bet.

Old-fashioned remedies

Sometimes the old ways are best. Rub some mayonnaise onto the crayon marks and allow it to soak in for a few minutes. Then give the area a wipe with a damp cloth. Non-gel toothpaste also works well to scrub away the stains. Just rinse with water.

Disposable cleaning erasers

Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser works miracles on crayon stains, although they shouldn’t be used on certain surfaces. To be sure, test the product in a hidden spot before using elsewhere. Don’t use on shiny surfaces.

On www.audiokarma.org I read a great tip that you should use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to cheaply clean your stylus. The white Magic Erasers don't contain any soaps or chemicals – rather their fine, porous material is very effective for diamond needle cleaning. The key is to very lightly lower your stylus onto the block and then lift up a few times; don't drag it across. If your having problems with sibilance (harsh sssssss sounds) a good clean with one of these may help. How I clean my stylus: No harmful chemicals, expensive solutions, or brushing. Just use the cue lever and lift the stylus up and down a few times on the DRY, chemical free Magic Eraser. The stylus gently sinks into the sponge made from melamine foam, which is mildly abrasive. A box of 7 costs around $6, and you could probably find it for less. You really only need a little chunk of it cut to the right height to do the job. Regular cleaning will extend the life of the stylus and help maintain the sound quality. Note: If your setup doesn’t allow you to free up the tonearm like I’m doing in the video. Cut an even thinner piece of sponge and put it directly on the platter. Avoid rubbing the stylus with the sponge as it could damage the tip or pull the shank off the cartridge.
