It seems like these days everyone is wearing gel nails and for good reason. Their durable and glossy finish is worth a couple of extra dollars you’ll pay to get them done. But to make sure your gel nails stay looking fabulous for as long as possible, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Understanding Gel Nails

Before diving into care tips, it’s important to understand what gel nails are. Unlike traditional nail polish, gel nails are applied as a liquid and then cured under a UV or LED light, which makes them more durable and longer-lasting.

Be Gentle with Your Nails

Gel nails are strong but not indestructible. Avoid using your nails as tools to pick or pry things open (yes, it can be tempting). This can cause the gel to lift from your natural nail, leading to chipping, peeling, or breaks.

Proper Removal

Never rip off gel nails. Always go to a professional for removal, or if you must do it at home, follow a gentle soak-off process. Improper removal can severely damage your nails.

Give Your Nails a Break

Finally, regularly wearing gel nails without a break can weaken your natural nails. Taking breaks between applications is a great way to let your nails recover.
