Changing out your hair color is the easiest way to give yourself a whole new look, but it’s important to put some thought into what color will suit you. In addition to your skin tone, you need to keep in mind your complexion’s undertone. Here’s your guide to getting the right hair color.

Fair Skin

For fair skin, your best going with lighter hair colors. Fair complexions with warm undertones like Elizabeth Olsen’s are best with butterscotch, strawberry blonde, and honey and for fair complexion with cool undertones like Julianne Hough’s, they work well with platinum, flaxen, and champagne blonde.

Medium and Olive Skin

These skin tones look so good with deep, rich browns, and earthy colors. Make sure to add some highlights in gold or honey so your hair doesn’t look flat. For complexions with cool undertones like Alexa Chung’s, opt for toasty hues like chestnut brown, auburn, and cinnamon. For complexions with warm undertones like Shay Mitchell’s, try deep browns and mochas. If you want to go lighter, golden caramel and copper are your best choices.

Dark Skin

You want your complexion and hair to contrast and this may mean going lighter or darker. Deep, dark tones of espresso and inky black work well on darker skin tones like Lupita Nyong’o’s. If you have warm undertones like Yvonne Orki, choose maple brown, mahogany, or toffee.
