What’s the Deal With Thousand Island Dressing?

You might have heard of thousand island dressing, or maybe even put it onto a Reuben or turkey sandwich. But, what is it really and what does it have to do with any island?

The history behind the name of the dressing is that it was actually made in Thousand Islands, New York in the early 20th century. History doesn’t say exactly who made it first, but it was said to be a wife of a fisherman.

Thousand island dressing is a really unique sauce and doesn’t really feel like dressing at all. There are different variations of it, but the major ingredients are mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, lemon juice or vinegar, and a plethora of other ingredients.

Here’s how to make it at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of mayo
  • 1/4 cup of minced onions
  • 2 tablespoons of ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons of sweet relish
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt

Instructions

  1. Mix everything in a bowl and then cover it and let it sit in the fridge overnight before you use it, so the flavors will blend together better.
  2. Store in an airtight container for up to a week and use it as a spread or a dip!
