What the Heck are Candy Melts?

Have you ever wondered how a cake pop can have that gorgeous, smooth exterior? Have you ever wandered down the baking aisle and seen something called candy melts and had no idea what they were? If so, you’re not alone. Candy melts are a really useful ingredient if you want an easy way out of tempering chocolate, and if you love to bake, they are definitely something you should have in your pantry.

Candy melts kind of have a chocolate-like taste, but there is actually no quality about them that is chocolate. In fact, candy melts are just a combination of sugar and some sort of vegetable fat mixed together, which makes melting them much easier because of their more simple chemical make up.

Candy melts are great when you want to add a burst of color to your baked goods, but don’t want to go through the process of trying to melt chocolate and then color them all before they start to harden. Candy melts melt easily, which is why they are named as such and are key in giving things like cake pops that signature look. But, you can use candy melts for much other baked goods, like decorating fruits, nuts, or making cool decorations.
