Vibrant Celebrity Portraits Made From Crochet

Crochet is one of those art forms that many of us think is forgotten and lost. But then we get to meet talented artists who are creating exceptional artwork using hooks and yarn, and we are just speechless. Katika is one of those creative artists, who is making incredible celebrity paintings using crochet.

Katika is a young artist from Hungary who fell in love with crochet in 2014. Over the next couple of years, she’s been working hard to master this technique and develop her own artistic language. Her portfolio includes several hundred pieces in vibrant colors, and the most interesting are her celebrity crochet portraits.

“I’m set on making full use of yarn’s texture and bright colors to create three-dimensional, saturated pieces, in which the image itself harmonizes and resonates with its physical form as well as with my artistic technique and vision,” the artist wrote for Bored Panda.

“Sometimes I make beautiful pieces. It does not have a practical use but exists to make your life brighter, to amuse, and to captivate you,” she added.

Bits and pieces of various projects as well as stand-alone works throughout the five first years as a fiber artist. Right after creating my art language I immediately decided, that first five years of creating yarn paintings would be my learning period of speaking it. While going down this lengthy path, I developed speaking and writing skills, and taught myself to think it as well. I hopped from one concept to another, learned to paint faces and objects with yarn, feeling like a child, taking first steps in understanding the world around me. These five years are full of spelling mistakes, wobbling steps in the right direction, and tries to find new meanings. They are also full of many small projects, which have vastly different weight in terms of importance and artistic value, which I, being my own worst critic, fully understand and embrace. I feel like I have come a long way and changed a lot, and finally, have a fine command of the language which I once dreamt of and aspired to learn. Some of the themes displayed here I will probably come back to since people rarely denounce ideas that were once immensely important for them. As of now, this body of work, that I have accumulated during the first five years of doing crochet art, stands as my personal chronicle of a long and important journey.
