Useless Cleaning hacks

We often hear of clever little tricks to help us keep our homes clean. But sometimes they just don’t work. Read on for some cleaning myths to avoid.

Hot water can kill all germs

Contrary to what you might assume, a brief wash in hot water does not kill all germs. The water systems in our homes are set to around 120 degrees F.

This is at least 92 degrees lower than is required to kill some (not all) bacteria, which die off at about 212 degrees F. The contaminated area also needs to be exposed to this extremely hot water for several minutes before any bacteria will die. Keep your surfaces clean by using a disinfectant such as Lysol, pine oil, or chlorine bleach, especially if your family has been sick with flu.

Coca-cola is the top toilet cleaner

Although carbonated sodas do contain small amounts of phosphoric and citric acids, the amount is not enough to remove stains in a toilet.

Also, soda does not kill bacteria or viruses that might be present in the toilet, and actually provide a sugary breeding ground for microbes. Use (cheaper) disinfectant toilet cleaners instead.
