It’s pride month, which means if there’s any time to dye your hair rainbow, it’s now. And if you’re like most teens and young adults today, you probably want to do it at home, where you can spend significantly less money than if you were to go to a salon. But, as you probably know, dying your hair on your own comes with lots of risks of messing up and winding up with less-than-perfect results, especially if you attempt something complicated like a rainbow. So here are some tips if you do want to try it that will help you avoid a blunder.

  • Keep a towel nearby and wipe your gloves off between every color
  • Be super careful about sectioning your hair. Take your time with it instead of doing it haphazardly as you might for one solid color
  • Use separate bowls for the different colors. If you don’t have that many hair color bowls, you can also use clear plastic cups.
  • Swatch your hair colors on paper towels to make sure you like the color before you put it in your hair
  • Rinse with cold water to avoid the colors bleeding together
  • In fact, wash your hair only with cold water if you want the rainbow to last for all of pride month
