Spicy food and drinks are especially enjoyable during winter. Some of these spices go great with tea or mulled wine, typical winter beverages that will keep you warm and lift your mood. However, some of the spices can actually help boost your immunity and fight cold, so make sure you use them whenever you can.

Clove

Clove originates from eastern Indonesia where it is used as a breath freshener. In China, during the Han dynasty, everyone at the palace was obliged to chew the spice before they approached the emperor. Clove contains a high percentage of antioxidants (half a spoonful of clove has the same amount of antioxidants as a half cup of berries) and is useful as an anti-inflammatory remedy.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the oldest and most popular spices. While most of the spices are obtained from ground seeds of various plants, cinnamon is different – it is an inner layer of wood bark, which needs to be dried and rolled before use. It is extremely pleasant when it is added to cocoa, tea or mulled wine, and in various desserts.
