When it comes to our makeup collection, we seem to have products all over the place. You’ll instantly feel like your life is in order when you organize your makeup collection and it will make getting ready in the morning so much easier. Here’s a step-by-step guide for how to get started.

Step 1: Get Rid of What You Don’t Use

Start by checking expiration dates and getting rid of anything that is expired. If you don’t see a date, eye products should be tossed after three to six months, lip products should be tossed after 12 months, liquid and cream face products should be tossed after 12 months, and powder face products should be tossed after 18 months.

If your product looks or smells weird, throw it away. In addition, if you have products you don’t use, just get rid of them.

Step 2: Sanitize What’s Left

Now is the time to disinfect your makeup products. Makeup brushes and sponges should be washed after every use, so give your tools a quick spritz with 70 percent rubbing alcohol. Deep clean your brushes with warm water and makeup brush cleanser once a month and wash your sponges every two weeks with a brush cleanser.

For your makeup products, eye pencils and crayons should be sharpened at least once a week for a fresh tip. The outer packaging of your makeup should be wiped down every few weeks with wipes.

Step 3: Make a System

Keep your makeup in one or two compartments of a makeup case and put the extras like tweezers or lash curlers in another section. If you have a lot of makeup, consider getting clear acrylic makeup organizers that can be displayed on your counter.
