]]>When it comes to caffeine, there is the right amount that can help you starve off a headache as caffeine naturally narrows your blood vessels and relieves the pressure. This is why most migraine medicine includes caffeine. On the other side, consuming too much caffeine can actually give you a headache, as your body gets used to a certain amount of caffeine each day and when you stop drinking as much the blood flow rushes back to the brain, causing a headache.
To get rid of headaches, firstly start drinking lots of water—caffeine tends to dehydrate you which makes a headache worse, so start your day drinking water instead of coffee.
These headaches might push you to go cold turkey on caffeine, but this is not the best option. Instead, start cutting back slowly. Give your body time to adjust to less and less caffeine per day and the headaches will go too. 200 milligrams of caffeine per day or less is the number you want to aim for.
Also, start using natural energy sources instead of relying on caffeine every day, by sleeping well, getting more sunlight, and doing yoga or meditation.

]]>That is the reality for some though. Insomnia hits the best of us, leaving us staring at the clock until the early hours, hoping for sleep to take over…
If what we described sounds familiar, we have a technique that can help. Straight out of the army, this is a method employed by military personnel who need to fall asleep fast as they don’t always have much time in dreamland.
First things first: get into a comfortable position. A good idea is to lie on your back and imagine that you are in a field, staring up at the sky; or in a canoe on still water. If your mind begins to wander, repeat the phrase “don’t think” for 10 seconds.
Begin to relax your body by focusing on your breath. Start with your forehead and face, releasing all tension as you work your way down through each part of your body.
As you move from the top of your head down, imagine a warm sensation traveling throughout your body. Let it move to your chest, down your arms, and all the way to the tips of your fingers.
Inhale deeply and bring your awareness to the center of your chest. From there, allow the warmth to make its way to your stomach, thighs, legs, feet, and toes.

As tempting as it may be to take a mid-day nap when you haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep, do your best not to, as it can make it harder to fall asleep at night.
Exercising regularly is a great way to reset your internal clock and encourage your body to produce melatonin, the hormone that controls the sleep-wake cycle.
If you’re having a hard time falling asleep at night, try making sure your environment is properly calibrated for good sleep. Maintain a cool bedroom temperature, get relaxed, and make sure it’s quiet.

]]>Even if you’re really tired, try to keep your naps between 10 to 30 minutes in length. Any longer and you’ll just feel groggier when you wake up.
The later in the day you nap, the more likely it is that your nap will interfere with your ability to get a good night’s sleep later on. For best results, try to get your nap in before 3 p.m.
Okay, this isn’t a must, but getting in the habit of power napping in the middle of the day can have all sorts of benefits like regulating your emotions, keeping you alert, and reducing fatigue. So don’t hesitate to take a nap if you feel like you want and need one.

]]>But when it comes to getting enough sleep, are we getting too obsessed with it? Is it really necessary to sleep as much as we can and can sleeping too much have the opposite effect of what we want?
The optimal amount of sleep for adults is seven to nine hours per night. Just like the lack of sleep can lead to various physical and mental health problems, similar can happen if you sleep too much. Sleeping for 10 or more hours every day will actually leave you feeling tired, anxious, and forgetful.
Does this mean that you need to stress about the exact amount of sleep you’re getting every night? Not really. You probably have a wake-up schedule already, depending on your daily activities, so all you need to do is adjust the time you go to bed in the evening. Give your body enough time to rest and enjoy the benefits of proper sleep.

]]>Staying cool during the day is less of a challenge. You can refresh by drinking water and wearing loose clothes, but when the nighttime comes, it gets a bit more tricky. Opening the windows will let the noise (and mosquitos) in, but sweating through the night is definitely not acceptable. The solution may be drinking a warm beverage before bed.
The idea can seem weird at first. When you’re hot, your instincts tell you to drink something cold to cool down, right? Turns out, drinking something hot in the evening is actually the key if you want to survive summer heatwaves. This was backed up by Ollie Jay, a University of Ottawa researcher who conducted a series of experiments to see what effect hot drinks have on body temperature. He and his team discovered that hot beverages result in “a lower amount of heat stored inside your body,” and can help cool you down. Now that you know that, try it yourself!

]]>Falling asleep and getting REM sleep is more difficult when you’re overheated. Before you head to bed, turn down the air conditioner and use a lighter blanket during the summer months.
With the days longer and the sun setting later, your circadian rhythm can be thrown off making it hard to fall asleep and get a good night’s sleep. Prepare for daylight’s savings time by going to bed and waking up a half-hour earlier than usual leading up to the time change.
The warmer months bring on a whole new set of seasonal allergies which make it difficult to breathe and sleep well. Talk to your doctor about allergy medication and make some changes around your home like sleeping with the window closed to relieve your symptoms.
When you’re on vacation you want to use all hours of the day to explore new things, but while you’re doing this you’re interrupting your sleep. Waking up for a sunrise yoga retreat or staying up all night to star gaze affects your sleep, especially if you’re in a country with a different time zone. While on vacation, try your best to maintain your normal sleep schedule to make the transition back into your daily life easier.

]]>Walnuts are packed with tryptophan, an amino acid that helps our body produce “sleep hormones” serotonin and melatonin. If you have trouble falling asleep, a handful of walnuts can help you solve this problem.
You already know that a cup of warm milk can help you fall asleep faster, but as it turns out, all dairy products are great for promoting sleep. Cheese, yogurt, and milk are all packed with calcium that helps your body make melatonin.
White rice increases blood sugar and insulin levels and triggers the production of serotonin, which in turn will make you sleepy pretty fast.
Honey is also one of the foods that trigger the release of the sleep hormone, melatonin, so try mixing honey into your favorite herbal tea and relax before going to bed.
