Some foods are simply too beautiful to be eaten and that’s definitely true for amezaiku, the Japanese art of sugar candy sculpted into various objects. Unlike other sculpture forms, amezaiku artists don’t chip a single block to make their designs. They use their hands and various tools to shape candy material called mizuame into various shapes and designs—typically animals.

They need to work with the material while it’s hot and only have a few minutes to do their magic before the sculpture hardens. In the end, artists use edible paint to make their designs even more beautiful. The result is a beautiful, unique lollipop that’s a true work of art.

Amezaiku dates back to the Heian period in Japan (around a thousand years ago). The creations became more popular after the 17th century thanks to traveling street vendors.

One of the artists who keep this art form alive today is Shinri Tezuka. He has a shop in the Asakusa district in Tokyo where he sells gorgeous creations of koi fish, goldfish, frogs, and many other animals. He also holds public classes where he encourages everyone to try and make a relatively simple rabbit design themselves.

The Japanese art of Kintsugi gives new life to broken objects. By mending broken pieces with precious metal, Kintsugi artists are able to repair broken things and give them a new life, making them even more beautiful than they were before. The philosophy of Kintsugi can easily be translated into our lives as it teaches us to pick up and repair ourselves after we “break”.

Traditionally, kintsugi uses liquid gold or liquid silver to bring together pieces of broken objects. Gold and silver enhance the beauty of each of those objects, sending a message that they are only now achieving their full potential. Each piece is unique and fixed in irregular patterns which only emphasizes its beauty.

Kintsugi is also important for humans. As we don’t typically expect other people to be perfect, we often expect that from ourselves. We’re afraid to show vulnerability, our wounds, and mistakes, but Kintsugi teaches us that those things only make us more beautiful—and ultimately, more human. The ability to heal and grow after suffering something that shouldn’t be hidden; it should be celebrated and covered in gold.

Next time you break something, fix it with the Kintsugi method and display it as a reminder of how beautiful imperfections can be.

Whether you put mayo on everything or the very thought of it makes you cringe, this “sheet-like condiment” is sure to make heads turn.

On February 20, Bourbon, a Japanese snack company, announced that their “Mayonnaise Sheets” will hit the shelves on March 2. This shocking news sparked mixed reactions all over social media.

Some people are still on the fence about this idea. “Japan has sliced mayonnaise. I am both grossed out and intrigued,” wrote a Twitter user.

Others are just flat-out disgusted, adding hashtags such as #nothankyou and #pass to their posts about the product.

Despite the controversy, some readers can’t wait to test out the slices. A twitter user asked, “Can I do a Kickstarter just to get me as much of this as I can?”

A few years ago, the same company introduced similar sheets of chocolate ganache, a more reasonable condiment. Although that product didn’t exactly win the hearts of the Japanese people, they hope the mayonnaise sheets will be more successful as a way to introduce consumers to “simple cooking.” The company will release two types of mayo slices: tuna mayonnaise and mayonnaise with mentaiko – a type of spicy fish egg.

Tokyo is home to many tourist attractions that will take your breath away, but none of them compares to TeamLab Borderless. This one of a kind museum has been around for only a year, but it’s already attracting more visitors than the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

Together with TeamLab Planets, this establishment has attracted 3.5 million tourists from 160 different countries since opening its doors in 2018 – including a long list of celebrity visitors, such as Halsey, Kanye West, and Carly Rae Jepsen.

So, what makes this museum so special that tourists (and celebrities) put it on the top of their bucket list every time they go to Japan? TeamLab Borderless won them over with the incredible sensory experience, which allows you to immerse your body in borderless art.

This digital art museum crated by TeamLab covers a total of 10.000 square meters, but you don’t need a map to explore them. The creative team behind this unique experience encourages visitors to wander around and fully immerse into this borderless world, as artworks move out of one room to another.

Japan is quite popular for its alternative fashion style: Harajuku. This fashion movement started in the early 1980s and became popularized in the West, 20 years later. Harajuku coined the name after the Harajuku train station in Tokyo.

People who follow the Harajuku style don’t adhere to one type of fashion but instead, collect different pieces that they find resonate with them.

Layers of Colors

With Harajuku street fashion, the norms of fashion don’t apply. Teenagers and adults are free to express whichever identity they feel comfortable with showing. These ladies look like they stepped out of a Sailor Moon episode and are totally slaying it.

Soft Style

Even though Harajuku is beyond the idea of mainstream fashion, it still manages to be gentle despite being expressive. Harajuku fashion is neither overwhelming nor underwhelming but rather a mix of different unique tones.

90’s Kids Rejoice

Pokemon, Detective Conan, Evangelion – feel free to dress in whichever anime you love the most. This Pikachu backpack is super kawaii with the matching t-shirt too.

The land of the rising sun is the most mysterious and interesting place to visit in the world. If you’re planning to visit Japan anytime soon, you should prepare by reading some basic information about this fascinating county.

Here’s a few tips that’ll make your trip to Japan more comfortable.

No tipping, please

Unlike many other countries, tipping is not customary in Japan. If you leave a generous tip in a restaurant or some other place, the staff will probably be very confused or even offended.

Money

It would be good to have multiple payment options available once you come to Japan, like traveler’s cheques or debit cards – just in case something happens. If you run out of cash, finding an ATM that accept foreign cards can be pretty hard.

Shoes

Make sure to wear shoes you can take off easily because you can be asked to remove them before entering some places such as inns, cafes or even restaurants.

Manners

As soon as you come to Japan, you’ll notice how specific their culture is. Being polite and greeting strangers with a smile is a big part of that culture. Try to do the same thing when you talk to locals – use polite phrases to show gratitude and appreciation and you won’t have any problems fitting in.

Spring is definitely the best time to start traveling, as nature awakens from its wintry spell. It’s a well know fact that this is also a perfect time to visit Japan – a country famous for its enchanting natural beauty and cherry blossoms. If you happen to find yourself in the land of the rising sun, make sure to visit Hokkaido – Japan’s northernmost main island.

Hokkaido is famous for its colorful flower fields that last almost all year round. One of the most beautiful and colorful is Shikisai no Oka, or Shikisai Hill. It spreads out on 15 acres and is tucked in between Mount Tokashi and the plains of Takikawa.

There is no better place on Earth for all those who love nature and flowers. Captivating panoramic view of gardens packed with colorful flowers will inspire any art and photography enthusiast. Endless yellow rows of sunflowers blend perfectly with soft purple lines of lavender. But planting arrangement changes every year and visitors never know what kind of visual feast to expect. One thing is sure – no one leaves disappointed.

Take a look at the pictures and plan your trip to Japan.

Mature Nature created so many extraordinary wonders that it’s hard to believe that some of them actually exist – and Wisteria Tunnel is a case in point. This pastel-colored passageway is one of Japan’s best hidden secrets, and it feels like a fairy tale come to life.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bhyf2E5nA5V/

This magical tunnel of cascading flowers can be found at the Kawachi Fuji Gardens in Kitakyushu. It’s located in close proximity to Japan’s sixth largest city of Fukuoka, but once you get there – you’ll probably never want to leave.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bjsc7VInL8l/

Kawachi Fuji Gardens are home to about 150 wisteria plants, featuring a total of 20 species, in different shades of white, blue, purple and pink. This amazing variety of colorful hanging flowers is the reason why Wisteria Tunnel looks straight out of fairy tale.

Wisteria Tunnel isn’t one of those tourist spots you can visit any time you want. It abides to the rules of nature, and that’s why it looks best during the spring. If you’re going to Japan and want to pay a visit to this whimsical passageway, make sure to do it in late April or early May, when flowers are in full bloom.
