The monochromatic drawings of illustrator Henn Kim have been described as “poetic”, “minimalist” and “surreal”. When the South Korean artist was 17 years old, she stopped speaking. Kim struggled with crippling depression and insomnia during her late teens, which caused her to withdraw from the friends and family around her.

Art ultimately proved to be her saving grace. She spent her sleepless nights drawing. Besides being a form of therapy, it also helped Kim perfect her skills. “My head was full of words and images that I couldn’t release through my mouth – only through my art”, said the artist in an interview with the BBC.

And she never stopped drawing since. Her creations speak of love, dreams, and fantasies, all in an instantly recognizable style. The themes and aesthetics clearly strike a chord with many people, as Kim gained a following of 870,000 on Instagram. Her work was even featured on the cover of Sally Rooney’s 2018 bestseller Normal People. Two years before that, in 2016, she utilized her talent in a UNICEF project, in which she depicted the impact of pollution on children’s health.

To this day, Kim draws peace and joy from her artwork. Below, you can get a glimpse into the magical black and white world of her illustrations. Follow her Instagram for more.

The talented graphic designer Beatrix Papp publishes an ongoing series of fun illustrations that explore how complicated the relationship with our phones has become over time. She posts the adorable illustrations on her Instagram page where her following is starting to grow.

“We use our phones, tablets, and notebooks everywhere in our lives. I try finding those moments when we can see their ubiquitousness as funny and likable,” the artist tells Bored Panda.

Papp is not the first artist to use this subject, but unlike many others, she doesn’t mean to criticize the way we use phones in virtually every situation. Instead, she points out how cute it can be and how phones naturally merged into our lives, not only taking away from them but also allowing for new experiences.

Phones can have so many different functions and we use them for various things – from timing something to watching movies, filming our pets doing fun things, and getting directions when we’re lost. Check out Papp’s point of view in the illustrations below and follow her on Instagram to see more.

2020 has been rough on all of us, and staying put is hard when the world around you seems to be spiraling out of control. But there’s a silver lining to staying home: at least we’ve been cured of our FOMO.

Chloe Joyce’s illustrations will help you rediscover the joys of staying in. Featuring mainly women, her characters are seen lounging about in their underwear, solving a crossword, and practicing yoga. In other words: celebrating their alone time

https://www.instagram.com/p/BvvYWkcHKig/

“I just like to draw things that I want to see or that I find nice and interesting and that make me happy,” explained Joyce in an interview with  Goat Story. One of these things are house plants. “I love nature and plants,” says Joyce, “they always feature heavily in my illustrations.”

Scrolling through her illustrations might, indeed, inspire you to water your houseplants. “There’s never any one way that I approach work,” says Joyce, explaining the creative process itself. “I’m not an organized person so it doesn’t make sense for me to take an organized approach,” she adds. “Sometimes I’ll come up with an idea on the bus and I’ll scribble it down or it could be in the middle of the night when I get up and I’ll have to stay up the rest of the night trying to bring it to life.”

Los Angeles-based artist Bijou Karman mashes fashion and illustration together, creating a unique blend that’s both inspired by fashion and serves as fashionable inspiration in and of itself. With her clientele including giants like Apple and Google, as well as fashion brands and publications such as Prada, Zara, ELLE, and Harper’s Bazaar, it’s little wonder that she’s gained celebrity status amongst illustrators.

Through editorials, books, advertising, paintings, and more, Karman fashions a universe filled with fierce women, tropical plants, psychedelia, flowers, and everything chic, glamorizing vintage style while working to create an equal future for everyone.

“My personal style as an artist is really reliant upon bright colors and [the] mixing of different prints,” she explained in an interview with Vanity Fair. “And a lot of clashing patterns that you don’t think would work together harmoniously.”

One of her more famous collaborations was with celebrity superstar Rhianna. The singer and designer’s first collaboration with Stance Socks, was promoted with a series of illustrations of the singer created by Karman, whose work Rihanna had discovered online. “This is the most high-profile job I’ve ever done,” she admitted at the time, “and it showed people what I was capable of.”

“I was intimidated to work with [her] at first because I am such a big fan, but it was cool to take her suggestions and her style and bring my own style and sense of fashion to it,” she adds.

Travel writer and sketch artist Candace Rose Rardon is a visual storyteller. Traveling with a sketchbook and a set of watercolors, she documents her adventures in colorful, original ways, inspiring others to explore new ways of traveling.

Describing herself as an unofficial cultural anthropologist, Rardon is deeply inspired by cultures around the world—the traditions that define us, the rhythms that shape our days, and the rituals that bring communities together. Originally from the state of Virginia, Rardon has spent more than a decade traveling and living abroad, in cultures like India, New Zealand, and Uruguay.

“At the beginning, I pursued my passion for world cultures through writing,” she writes on her website, explaining her development as a travel blogger. “I earned my Master’s in Travel Writing with distinction from London’s Kingston University, before writing for a variety of publications,” she adds. Now a regular writer for the popular meditation app Calm, her visual story forms also lead to exciting collaborations with National Geographic and a feature in the New York Times.

Her work celebrates the transformative power of journeys. “Travel can change us, send us off in new directions,” writes Rardon, “and—sometimes when we least expect it—help us feel at home.”

Brooklyn-based illustrator Dena Cooper has made a name for herself, thanks to her realistic illustrations that focus on fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. Winner of the Fida 2020 Commercial Fashion Illustration Award, her clients include giants like Miu Miu, Cartier, and elf Cosmetics, and her work has been featured on Hypbae, 1883 Magazine, and Domino, amongst others.

Growing up in Virginia, Cooper took to drawing and creating at an early age, prompting an interest in the fine arts in high school and college. Her work is inspired by her education in fashion design as well as her early career as a womenswear designer in New York City.

“I’m going through a personal and artistic evolution of sorts,” she recently shared in an interview with Fida, “so my movements are somewhat fluid at the moment, but it feels like the right time to strengthen foundation.” According to Cooper, she’s been dedicating her quarantine time to meditating, writing, and drawing daily and has been building her confidence to share more of her social opinions as a part of my work. “It’s no longer enough for me to paint something beautiful, there needs to be an added dimension of responsibility and truth,” she remarks.

Cooper stresses that the fashion industry has a moral responsibility as well, explaining that “the fashion industry contributes to a great deal of social injustice in the world, so it’s only natural that fashion illustration should reflect and reveal these inconvenient truths.” She adds that “Like artists in any other industry, we have a great responsibility to be the change we envision for the world. I think fashion illustration has a role to play in sustainability, and holding brands accountable by educating the public about unethical practices.”

With spring behind us and summer almost over with, these past months have been far from normal. But while we can’t really enjoy the benefits of sunshine, there’s no stopping us from filling our Instagram feed with summer inspiration.

With flowers, and floral patterns in particular, very much on-trend, we couldn’t have come across illustrator Ploypisut Chueobchoey at a better time. Known by her moniker, Ploy, Chueobchoey employs watercolor, gouache, and ink to create bright illustrations that feature mainly flowers.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CC8IXwzj1V2/

Based in Bangkok, Thailand, Ploy was born and raised in a Thai-Chinese family, with both cultures playing a significant role in her artistic upbringing. Inspired by wall paintings in Chinese temples, as well as Thai textiles, Ploy took to drawing at a young age.

“During my childhood, I was surrounded by Chinese and Thai decorations,” she recalled in an interview with Lake. “My grandpa used a Chinese ceramic bowl and teapot, and my grandma wore a Thai motif textile cloth. I thought I absorbed a lot from my childhood environment. My parents always encouraged me to continue my creative path.”
