The trusty microwave has been around for a while now and we have grown to love and depend on how easy it makes our lives. Whether you want to heat up a meal, or some leftovers or if you want to pop some popcorn, the microwave has been our go-to appliance.

However, there have been some concerns about the safety of heating food in plastic containers. Potential toxins have the potential to be released while the plastic is heated and consequently contaminate the food.

Heat can remove nutrients from food when we cook our food. It is done at a controlled lower temperature. However, microwaves can easily overheat out food and break down the nutrients, rendering the food useless to our bodies.

Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are found in poultry and fish that have been cooked at high temperatures. These compound have been known to change DNA and consequently increase the risk of cancer.

Certain plastics have also been associated with fertility issues. BPA has been banned from being used in infant bottles and cups because it has been associated with heart disease and diabetes.

Plastics marked with a 3, 6 or 7 have been known to contaminate food when heated in a microwave.
