As the pressures of life pile up on a daily basis, it can seem like a dream to let it all go. When you’re paying four figures for rent each month and having to work overtime just to make ends meet, the idea of heading to a place you’ve never seen and resetting your life can be very appealing.

Here’s the thing: there’s no reason you can’t.

In this day and age, more than 40 percent of Americans have a job that allows them to work from anywhere. If you’ve got an internet connection, you can live anywhere… even some of these exotic places.

Mexico

If you can speak Spanish, you’re already well on your way to being at home in the United States’ southern neighbor. Even if you can’t, it’s well worth the time to learn the language with how cheap it is to live in Mexico.

Consider this: a mid-level three-bedroom apartment in Mexico City can be had for about $1,100 a month. In San Francisco, that won’t even pay for half of a studio.

Portugal

How does life on the Atlantic Ocean sound to you? If you’re on the east coast of Florida, you might be paying $1,600 for a one-bedroom apartment near Miami. But in Portugal, you can live in an apartment in Lisbon, the capital city, for half of that cost.

You can even go cheaper than that: in Porto in northern Portugal, you can find a quality apartment for around $500 a month.

Thailand

Great food? Check. A country rich in natural beauty? Check. Affordable living? Check and mate.

Thailand is so beautiful that it might seem impossible to live there, but it’s actually fairly reasonable, even if you choose to live in the capital of Bangkok. A one-bedroom in Bangkok can be had for less than $700, allowing you to spend your money checking out the flavors and nature that have made Thailand a bucket-list destination for so many Americans.

You only have one shot at life, so there’s no reason to spend some of your best years slaving away to make ends meet in a costly American city. There’s a big world out there, and most of it is a lot more affordable than you think. Take your pick and do some exploring!
