Elsie’s is a 118-year-old deli in Haddon Township, New Jersey, but is also known by another name: the home of the pickle sandwich. They’ve gotten this name because they make a special kind of sandwich that forgoes the bread entirely and instead, replaces it with a giant pickle! You might think it’s crazy, and you wouldn’t be entirely wrong until you’ve tried it yourself.

One of the reasons behind the change of tradition is because the management saw how many people had cut out the bread of their diets either by choice or not, which meant that sandwiches were off the table for them. That’s when the pickle sandwich was born, and Elsie’s is ecstatic that their former customers who were getting left behind are now back in the swing of things.

If you want to start small, you can work your way up to a proper pickle sandwich by first trying one of their roll-ups. What they do is take strips of pickles and lay out all the goodies that would normally go into a sandwich, or sometimes ones that are a bit on the odd side, and roll it into the perfect little wrap for you to enjoy.
