No Can Opener? No Problem!

Sometimes, the can opener goes missing just when you need it most. But don’t worry, if you don’t want to go ask your neighbor to borrow theirs, there are plenty of ways to get a can opened without one. Make sure you are extra careful because some of these methods include sharp tools.

Rock

The safest way to get a can opened is by rubbing it against a rock. Just go back and forth until you see some liquid on the rock-that means the seal is thin enough to break. Simply slip a butter knife or spoon under and pry open the lid.

Chef’s Knife

Using the very bottom of a chef’s knife, create small holes all around the edge of the can. Once you’ve gone around the perimeter of the can, you can use a small tool or a butter knife to lift the lid.

Spoon

Some cans are thin enough that you can actually use a spoon on its own to open it. Dig the spoon into the can, making a small hole. Rub the tip of the spoon back and forth in the hold to create a wider opening. Continue doing that around the edge until the lid is released.
