Raise your hand if you look good in your passport photo. Raise your hand if you know anyone who looks good in their passport photo. Yeah, that’s what we thought.

We’re not sure if it’s the camera used, the white background, or the fact that the picture in question has to last the next five years, but most of us cringe when having to hand over our identity document to airport officials…

The struggle of taking a good passport photo is real. That’s why beauty blogger, Alicia Breuer, has created a make-up tutorial with over a million views specifically for the occasion.

Step #1

The belief once was that eyebrows are sisters, not twins; but that is now outdated. The brows frame the face, so Alicia recommends getting them as symmetrical as possible. Use some soap or your favourite brow gel to comb your caterpillars up and then straighten out the tops.

Step #2

Want people to think you’re glowing from the inside? This is how. Apply a glowy primer beneath your foundation and have the world believe you’ve been on vacation before even taking one.

Step #3

Contouring is all about creating shadow, and considering your passport photo will be 2D (and possibly black and white), it will be the enhanced angles that show up the most. Alicia recommends contouring more than usual to achieve that chiseled effect.

Step #4

The cat eye is on trend at the moment—and chances are it will still be in style until it’s time for you to retake your pic. Get the look by drawing a wing and applying mascara only to your outer lashes.

Step #5

Smiling is forbidden in passport pictures, so practise your pout. Overline your lips to create a fuller effect and obtain a pout that would make Kylie Jenner proud (or jealous!)
