Humidity and hair typically don’t go well together, but there are things you can do to keep your hair looking perfect even in humid weather.

Humidity during the summertime can make you really uncomfortable. It’s typically combined with heat and it’s not a pleasant combination. Besides getting all sweaty and sticky, we also have to deal with frizzy hair, no matter how carefully we styled it in the morning.

“Your hair reverts to its natural state when it comes in contact with moisture,” celebrity stylist Joseph Maine told Real Simple. “Since humidity is high levels of moisture in the air, you will see any wave or texture begin to coil up. We often refer to it as frizz because the humidity will primarily affect those little fine hairs or shorter pieces that have less weight to combat the moisture.”

You can deal with this by washing your hair with cooler water which will close your hair scales and prevent the humidity from messing up your hairstyle. An ionic hairdryer can help, too. Make sure your hair is completely dry before you leave the house—it’s best to wash it the night before and it won’t frizz so much. Just to be sure, make sure your ends are moisturized and you will be good to go!
