In order to prevent bacteria build up, makeup artists say we should be cleaning our makeup brushes at least once a week. And if we don’t? Well our dirty brushes might just be the reason we’re still getting occasional breakouts in our 20s.

If like me, you confess to not cleaning your brushes and then throwing them out when they start to look gross, this how-to guide to cleaning your brushes might just save you dollars down the line.

Step One: Rinse

First, wet the bristles of your brush with lukewarm water. You don’t need to soak them but makes sure they are damp.

Step Two: Cleanse

Next, you want to use a makeup brush cleanser to remove bacteria. If you don’t own any, you can use soap with a bit of makeup remover. Place a drop in the palm of your hand and massage the tips of the bristles with the cleanser.Wet the bristles with lukewarm water.

Step Three: Rinse And Squeeze

After the cleanse, you want to rinse the bristles so there is not soap left on your brush. After rinsing in lukewarm water, squeeze the bristles so there is no excess moisture clinging to the brush. You can use a clean towel to do this

Step Four: Reshape

Finally, you want to make sure that your brushes dry in the right shape. Do not leave them on your towel but leave the brush hanging off the edge of the table. This means they will dry in the correct shape.
