If you often find yourself responding with “tired” when people ask how you are, there’s a good chance that you’re burnt out. Burn-out is often caused by the jobs in our lives, but the sensation of overwhelming exhaustion and disinterest can be the result of any excessive and prolonged emotional, physical, and mental stress. Here are some ways to recharge.

Designate Time to Relax

This may seem obvious, but getting it done in practice is not as simple. We are constantly bombarded by technology, so turn off your laptop and your phone, and designate time to recharge (and no, scrolling on TikTok is not a form of relaxation). Meditation, yoga, reading a book, or going for a walk in nature can all be helpful ways to give you some “you” time.

Get in Touch with Your Creative Side

Creativity is a wonderful tool to combat burnout. Pick up an old hobby or project that you have neglected for a while, or start a new one that makes you feel excited. Choose fun activities that are unrelated to whatever is stressing you out.

Make Sure You’re Getting Plenty of Sleep

The exhaustion from burn-out can be physical, as well as mental and emotional. The body repairs itself during sleep, so replenish your physical structure by getting enough shut-eye. You’ll feel more refreshed, which will give you more energy to cope with stressful situations.

Stick to Healthy Foods

What we put into our bodies can have an enormous effect on our moods. Try reducing foods that are high in sugar and refined carbs, as well as caffeine and alcohol which can cause anxiety. Omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to mood-boosting, so stock up on salmon, seaweed, and walnuts.

Turn to Those You Love

You may be going through burnout, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Spending time with those you love is an excellent way to alleviate stress, and even a phone or video call can help. Speaking to a therapist or counselor can also be beneficial.
