A cast iron skillet is a great investment for your body and the quality of your food. There are many qualities that set a cast iron skillet apart from other types of pans. For one, it can go in the oven because it is made completely out of cast iron. And two, in actually releases some of that iron into the food, fortifying it without compromising flavor. That is especially important for vegans and vegetarians. If you are looking to invest in one, here is a step by step guide on how to clean them because again, they are completely unique and need special care.

  1. Run water over your cast iron pan after you’ve finished cooking.
  2. Most of the food will come off just from that, but for whatever’s left, using a sponge without soap on it to clean the rest off.
  3. If there is still any food left, put some salt on the pan and scrub with a non-soap sponge to get off all the bits.
  4. Heat the pan to evaporate the excess water.
  5. Put some oil, one with a high smoke point, and rub it with a paper towel all over the pan.
  6. Store until your next meal!
