Finding a Silver Lining to Travel Bans: Meet Brenna Holeman

“I like window seats, whisky, and long captions,” reads Brenna Holeman’s Instagram caption, which kinda sums it up. A travel blogger and rising Instagram star, Holeman has been on the road since 2006 and has so far visited 103 countries. Her experiences are shared on This Battered Suitcase blog, which has over the years become a sort of library, full of resources for fellow travelers.

With traveling a lifestyle choice, but also a vocation, COVID-19 hit Holeman (like other travel bloggers) hard. “I don’t need to explain why 2020 has been such a difficult year for so many,” she wrote in a recent Instagram post. “I’ve lost my main writing and editing job, one I loved very much. My business has practically tanked, just like many others in the travel industry.”

But if traveling has taught Holeman anything it was to live in the here and now. And so, she’s also managed to find a silver lining to international travel bans.

“As someone who loves travelling but has absolutely no desire to get on an airplane or promote international travel, I’ve known for a long time that all of my foreseeable travels will remain very close to home,” she says.

You know what the most surprising takeaway from the last three months in Canada has been? Just how much I love Canadian winters. After many winters spent in countries where the norm is rain (think Scotland, Japan, and England) I can’t believe how much I’ve been enjoying all of this snow. Three months in Manitoba, Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta have flown by, mainly because I’ve been trying my hand at so many winter activities (for example, I’ve seen ice castles, eaten dinner on a frozen river, and gone zip lining, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and sledding, with a winter festival coming up this weekend). Yeah, I could do without trying to start my car in -30, but for the most part, I am absolutely loving just how beautiful this country is in winter. If you've never been to Canada in winter, I highly recommend it at least once in your life. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• What about you? Are you a winter person? Where’s the snowiest place you’ve ever been? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Many thanks to @topdecktravel for hosting me on this fantastic ten-day tour around BC and AB, including Lake Louise (where this photo was taken – I’m standing on the frozen lake!) #ultimate49 #sponsored #canada150 #lakelouise #winterincanada #lovecanada #canadatravel #alberta #visitcanada #visitalberta #albertatourism #topdecker #topdecktravel

A socially-distanced road trip, close to home, is one way of traveling during the pandemic. “When I got to my cabin on Wellman Lake in Swan Valley, one thing hit me the hardest: it felt like home,” she writes. “Even this brief, socially-distanced road trip allowed me to feel that sense of adventure again, that sense of both excitement and calm that has taken me all over the world. ⁣A familiarity, even though I’d never been before.”
