Whenever most of us feel ‘snackish’, we turn to the faithful protein bar. They satisfy our appetites and are the perfect thing to eat ‘on the go’. But is your go-to hunger-buster the best option for your ravenousness?

Sugar factor

Your protein bar may be very high in sugar if it’s got that delicious coating on it. Check the sugar content of your protein bar. You could be eating up to half of your daily added sugar allowance in one snack. Men should average about 36g of added sugar daily, while the amount for women is 24g.

Calorie count

Don’t overlook the number of calories in your protein bar. The optimal amount is about 150 calories per bar. Coupled with a piece of fresh fruit, it will keep you feeling full and energetic.

Protein power

Some protein bars may not contain as much protein as you’d think. Check the label before you buy the product. A small protein bar should contain at least 5g of protein.

Sodium and fiber content

Check that your protein is not too high in sodium. Too much salt is bad for you. Try to eat protein bars that are high in fiber. They help to keep bowel movements regular.
