Can you believe that Hanukkah is just a week away? While there are so many great traditional foods that we’ve been eating for years, there are a lot of ways to make these foods more modern. Here are some fresh takes on the classics.

Latkes

Latkes, also known as potato pancakes, are a staple at any Hanukkah party, and if you want to make them sweeter, add root vegetables like beets, parsnips, and carrots. For the toppings go beyond sour cream and applesauce and try smoked salmon and goat cheese or garlicky aioli.

Sufganiyot

Sufganiyot are donuts and if you don’t like them, bread pudding with a fruit compote is a great sweet alternative.

Kugel

Kugel, an egg, butter, noodle, and raisin dish, is served at pretty much any holiday table and if you want to make it gluten-free and dairy-free, use gluten-free pasta and cashew cream.

Gelt Cookies

On its own chocolate gelt isn’t especially tasty, but it’s much better when pressed on sugar cookies to make a thumbprint cookie perfect for the holidays.
