As winter is quickly approaching, the cold weather is starting to affect us all. Whether you have bad skin in the winter or really chapped lips, the weather can hit you hard. Right about now everyone is going out and restocking their favorite lip balms, but is that really the solution to dry lips? Some people say it actually makes it worse, so read on to figure out is your lip balm is really betraying you.

Some lip balms include ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. These two products actually suck moisture out of your lips and then the water gets evaporated, leaving your lips even drier than before! However, if your lip balm has either of these two ingredients in them, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will not work. If the ingredients also include beeswax or shea butter, then you’re good to go. This is because these two ingredients act as a barrier between your lips and the moisture getting evaporated, so your lips won’t get dried out.

Alternatives

If you want to decrease your chances of dried lips completely, instead of using lip balm try coconut oil, pure shea butter, vitamin E, or castor oil.
