How to Create a Mini Veggie Garden

No matter how small your garden, you can still create your own mini vegetable garden with a few tips from the experts.

Track the sun

Some crops like tomatoes and other fruiting crops need 6 to 8 hours of full sun a day, while others can thrive on 4 to 6 hours. If your garden can provide this, you’re in business. You can track the arc of the sun with the Sun Seeker app.

Use the vertical

If you have a fence or a trellis, or you can put one in, you can grow climbing veggies such as peas, beans, and cucumbers.

 Build your garden

  • Add compost and a few cups of fertilizer to beds.
  • Loosen and turn over soil, and rake smooth. Take out any large pieces of clay.
  • If you have an irrigation system, check it before you start planting.
  • Sow seeds at the recommended spacing on the packet. Mark with tags for identification.
  • Once seedlings develop, mulch around them to prevent weed growth and retain moisture. A 1-inch top dressing will be adequate.
  • Keep your garden weed-free, and water as necessary.
  • Investigate companion planting to avoid the use of pesticides.
