According to Hervé Deschamps, a Cellar Master at Maison Perrier-Jouët, there is a right and wrong way to drink our favorite bubbly beverage – the champagne. Here are the tips he shared for Refinery29.

Don’t make the cork fly across the room. To achieve this celebratory effect, you need to mix the bottle first, and guess what? Half of your expensive drink will end up spilled on the floor.

Use a glass with a stem so you don’t affect champagne’s temperature while holding it.

Take your time while chilling the bottle, but don’t leave it in the fridge for days at a time. The optimum time to put your bubbly in the fridge is around three hours before the consummation.

After the bottle is open, you can store it in an ice bucket if you have one at hand. If you’re going to have the bottle open for more than an hour, reseal it so the bubbles stay trapped in.
