It’s not possible to bake a nice cake or cookies without baking powder, or is it? Next time you’re craving something sweet but can’t find any baking powder in your kitchen, consider using one of these great substitutions instead.

Cream of Tartar

As an acidic byproduct of fermenting grapes in the wine-making process, cream of tartar is the safest baking powder substitution you can find. Use 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1/2 a teaspoon cream of tartar to replace 1 teaspoon of baking powder.

Buttermilk

Thanks to its acidity, this fermented dairy product can also be used instead of baking powder. To substitute 1 teaspoon baking powder, you can use 1/2 cup buttermilk with 1/4 teaspoon baking soda.

Sour Milk

There is a great way to put sour milk to good use. 1/2 cup of sour milk combined with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda will have the same effect as 1 teaspoon baking powder.

Vinegar and lemon juice

This may sound strange, but vinegar and lemon juice can also be a great substitute for baking powder. It’s worth mentioning that their distinctive flavor will probably change the flavor of your baked dish, so think twice before you use them instead of baking powder.
