Most interior designers agree: it’s the small details that matter. A basic kitchen might look all the more grand, with the right utensils. And we don’t know about you, but quarantine has got us daydreaming about tea towels, ceramic mugs, and other such kitchen essentials.
That’s how we came across Kirill Babii’s hand-made wood utensils. Both minimal and beautiful, his work includes anything from a wooden spoon to a bell jar. “I like working with my senses,” remarked Babii in an interview with the Etsy blog where he explained his creative process. “The materials, and the function and requirements of the piece to create the best possible combination—something that distills the very best of everything and keeps only the most necessary elements.”
According to Babii, good design can happen fast and coincidentally, but more often than not, it’s the result of long and hard work with many fails. “But it’s always so inspiring to create,” he says. “It’s the most valuable time in my life.”
Working with two types of wood—walnut and apricot tree—his work is meant to last. Keepsakes past on from generation to generation. “I don’t necessarily think that we must only use natural materials in our lives, but I do think we should be quite careful about which materials we use and how our choices influence our life and the life of our surroundings,” says the Ukraine-based woodworker.
