NBC is set to bring the soulful sounds of Motown to your holiday season with the highly anticipated special A Motown Christmas. This year’s two-hour event, airing on December 11, 2024, will feature a star-studded lineup, blending classic Motown hits with festive cheer. Hosted by music legends Smokey Robinson and rising star Halle Bailey, the special promises a celebration of iconic music and unforgettable performances.
Bailey’s love of listening to Motown during the festive season dates back to her childhood when visiting her grandfather in South Carolina for Christmas. She told AP News “That’s how I first started listening to it. I remember the feeling of Christmas and the music of Motown being just the beautiful background music, anytime you’re opening presents. It’s just amazing.”
Among the featured performers are some of Motown’s greatest icons, including Gladys Knight, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, and The Temptations. These legendary artists will share the stage with contemporary performers such as Jamie Foxx, who will honor the music of Stevie Wonder, and Bailey, who will deliver a medley of Diana Ross’ hits. Other standout artists include Ashanti, Andra Day, Jordin Sparks, Bebe Winans, JoJo, and the Broadway cast of MJ The Musical.
The special will also feature exciting renditions of over 25 classic Motown songs, including “ABC,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “My Girl,” and “Dancing in the Streets.” A live band led by Emmy Award-winning musical director Rickey Minor will provide the soundtrack for the evening, ensuring that the music flows seamlessly as these beloved hits come to life.
The event will be available to watch live on NBC and will be streaming the following day. A Motown Christmas is a chance to experience the joy and energy of Motown through both nostalgic classics and modern interpretations, making it a perfect addition to your holiday traditions.
NBC has previously aired two celebrated Motown specials, Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, and Motown Returns to the Apollo, both of which went on to win Emmy Awards for their outstanding contributions to television entertainment. Therefore, it’s safe to say that A Motown Christmas is sure to be a highlight of the season. The special will not only celebrate the legacy of Motown but also introduce a new generation to the magic of its timeless music.
For those looking to stream the event, it will be available on Peacock starting December 12, ensuring fans can enjoy the show anytime after its premiere.
