Travel and food blogger known simply as Wandering Helene, is all about inspiring you to try new things and indulge in your curiosities. An American living in Slovenia, her adventures across Europe are documented and shared on her website and Instagram account with a growing number of followers.
“I didn’t travel or move abroad to start a travel blog,” she stresses in her bio, “it was just always a passion of mine that was just part of my life and now I document it for everyone to see. I want to share all of the bits of travel and living in a new culture attempting to navigate the written and unwritten social rules.”
One huge passion of hers is food. “I love every aspect of experiencing food,” she writes on her website. These aspects include trying new dishes, learning about new cuisines, learning new recipes or techniques, and even learning how products are made. “When I know I will be traveling to someplace new I try to dig around to find out what the local dishes are and where is the best place to try them,” says Wandering Helene. “Sometimes it becomes a bit more random, and we will drive until we find some small restaurant in the middle of nowhere, where they don’t even have a menu. I am passionate about local food.”
Another recurring theme throughout her blog is ancient castles. “I was never a girl obsessed with princesses or fairy-tales and during my studies, I sucked at archaeology so much,” she admits. “Now I find myself visiting castles, palaces, ruins of palaces anywhere I can.” After visiting her first castle in Italy, she was hungry for more. “I was just so impressed with the sheer impact a castle makes on a landscape or town, and that people built these with their hands is mindblowing to me,” she notes. “The more I reflect on castles, specifically as a structure, and how they changed meaning, purpose, and importance throughout history they are a valuable tool to understanding some aspects of a culture and place.”
