Transporting a Christmas tree requires preparation and adherence to the Highway Code to ensure safety on the roads, according to Liverpool Echo. Under the UK’s Highway Code Rule 98, all loads must be securely fastened to prevent hazards for other road users.
“Transporting a Christmas tree might seem straightforward, but it’s important to consider how your insurance policy applies. A small Christmas tree may fit securely in the trunk, laid crosswise to the direction of travel. To avoid dirt and scratches in the car’s interior, place a blanket underneath the Christmas tree and wrap the trunk in a cloth, as it helps protect the vehicle from contamination by resin and needles. Tree resin is very difficult to clean.
The tree should be secured tightly with a tension strap, as simple rubber bands or rubber expanders are insufficient for securing the heavy tree adequately. Many cars have attachment points like hooks and eyes in the trunk for securing cargo, as well as tie-down points on the vehicle floor. Transporting the tree on the roof is the most demanding method in terms of securing it. It should only be considered if the vehicle has a suitable roof railing or roof luggage carrier. For shorter distances, it is also possible to transport the Christmas tree home by cargo bike or bicycle with a trailer. When transporting a Christmas tree by bicycle, the load must be secured. Drivers should double-check that the tree doesn’t block their view, and it is important to ensure that the tree does not obstruct the cyclist’s view or become detached.
