This Latin American Dish is Vegan and Gluten Free!

In both Columbia and Venezuela, there is a special dish that no one can resist called arepas. Arepas are a type of bread that is made with cornmeal that is then grilled and stuffed with all sorts of fillings. This sandwich-like dish is becoming more popular around the world because they are easy to make, have few ingredients, and are both gluten-free and vegan! Ingredients

The arepas themselves only require salt, water, and cornmeal. The fillings can be whatever you chose, whether that be chicken, cheese, or whatever you have leftover in the fridge.

Method

  1. Combine the salt and the cornmeal in a bowl
  2. Make a well in the bowl and add in the flour slowly combining all the ingredients together
  3. Form into a ball and then flatten slightly into a thick disk
  4. Fry the arepas on both sides until they are golden brown
  5. Transfer to the oven for a few minutes to finish cooking
  6. Put the cook ones on a plate and cover with a towel to keep warm
  7. Once you’ve made all the arepas, you cut them almost in half so you can stuff them and enjoy!
