From old TV shows coming back to the NES Classic, the love for everything retro is all the rage right now. While this is grand, there are some things from the ’90s that should stay in the past. Fortunately, one under-appreciated style is making a strong return in the fashion world.

Where It All Began

In the late ’80s, scrunchies started gaining traction with the help of platinum-selling pop stars Madonna and Debbie Gibson. Before fading away in the mid-’90s, this trend was seen all over high schools across the country. Teen shows such as Saved By The Bell and Clarissa Explains It All are responsible for every girl rocking one in class.

Whip My Hair

Today, scrunchies have seen a resurgence with stars such as Mandy Moore and Margot Robbie wearing them in public. At the 2017 New York Fashion Week, Mansur Gavriel, which is run by designers Floriana Gavriel and Rachel Mansur, officially brought the item back into the mainstream. Fortunately, you don’t have to drop hundreds of dollars to keep your hair nice and neat. Scrunchies can easily be purchased at a dollar store near you.

Let Your Hair Down

Much like every other fashion trend, you can expect scrunchies to fade away in a few years. For the time being, the youth of today will have a stronger understanding of what made the ’90s an unforgettable decade. For those who went through the original journey, this may or may not bring up some outrageous fashion faux pas. We’re looking at you, tinted sunglasses and sweater vests.

There’s no telling what other trends will come back from the dead in the future. We’re just hoping that what made them awesome in the first place doesn’t get lost in the shuffle.
