Decorating our homes for the holiday seasons with Christmas trees and plants has become a much-loved tradition, but did you know that there are seasonal plants that can be dangerous for pets?
These flowers and plants can not only cause an upset stomach for your pets, but there are also some that are poisonous. If your pet likes to chew on things, make sure and that you stay away from these ones.
Holly
There’s a reason why the Christmas song goes “Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la,” (we’re sure you know how the rest of it goes). If you have pets, don’t use this as decoration, it will cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. If you’re not sure if your animal has ingested holly, signs of the poising are lip-smacking and head-shaking.
Amaryllis
Amaryllis has toxins that include lycorine, which causes vomiting, hypersalivation, tremors, and diarrhea. Be careful as this plant also goes by the names Belladonna, Saint Joseph Lily, Cape Belladonna, and Naked Lady.
Mistletoe
Maybe you shouldn’t kiss under the mistletoe or if you do be sure your pet isn’t anywhere nearby. In pets, this plant can cause cardiovascular and gastrointestinal problems. Your pet’s blood-pressure will drop and they will have difficulty breathing.
Lillies
We’re just as surprised as you are to see this flower on the list as it’s a beloved flower all year round. In cats, this plant can cause seizures and kidney failure and in dogs, they cause upset stomachs.
