If you work a full-time week, you may be stressing over the limited time you have to make exercize a focus. Between work, cooking, household chores, socializing, and sleep, it’s easy to let physical activity slide to the bottom of the to-do pile. Whilst each of us should be aiming to get physically active for as long as possible each week, the good news is that recent studies have indicated that just 10 minutes of walking each day can have a big impact on your body and mind. If you need motivation to step outside, check out these key reasons why even just a short walk has a huge impact.

Improve Circulation

Walking is one of the best ways to get the heart beating that bit faster, thereby improving blood flow and circulation. A 10 minute stroll (or, to up the ante, a brisk-paced walk) may not be the most cardio-intensive workout, but it will help keep everything in check and see you stay healthy until the spring and summer allow for more time spent outdoors.

Re-energize

If you’re working in a desk-bound job, the chances are that by midday you’re starting to flag and feel a little lethargic. Stepping outside, even for ten minutes, can help reset your mind and body and provide you with more energy for the rest of the working day. It will also stop your muscles cramping as you won’t be staying in one seated position for hours on end.

Mindful Moment

As you step out on your walk, make an effort to take in your surroundings and notice the things around you. This will help take your mind off work (which will probably reduce stress levels) and give you a moment to yourself in the middle of a busy day. Taking mindful moments can improve overall contentment and improve relaxation, as we stop and consider the world outside.

Ten minutes doesn’t sound like much, but it can add up to have a huge difference on your overall mental, physical, and emotional health.

Staying active in the winter is quite a conundrum and even reaching the recommended 10,000 steps per day might seem impossible. If you’re struggling to hit this number once cold and gloomy days arrive, this brief guide will help you increase your daily step count in no time.

Step Out on a Nice Day

We don’t get too many sunny days in the winter, but you should put them to some good use once they come your way. Step outside every time it’s not too gloomy or rainy outside, or consider checking the weather forecast in advance so you could plan longer walks.

Indoor Walking

Walking indoors is not so hard when you have a big home and can make a lot of steps just walking around and doing chores. On the other hand, if you’re living in a small apartment, you’ll probably struggle to increase your step count, but you can always head to a local mall where you can cover more ground.

Give Treadmill a Chance

Treadmill walking is another great way to increase your daily step count this winter without walking outdoors. Most people use this gym essential for running, but speed walking is also an option, and you can easily push your step count to 10,000 if you give it a try.

#LittlePositiveChanges I started this hashtag some time ago now, to remind me and all of you that it’s the little changes that can make big positive effects to your lives. Sometimes we all make goals that are too big! I have done it my whole life, always challenging myself too much, in these past years mainly around my health and getting fitter. Suffering with Lupus and Hyper-mobility changed my life, years ago I ran for my county, I loved running and being sporty, but slowly that become impossible and then carrying my 3 children took a toll on my body I never knew was possible. 6 years ago after Deacon I had a flare up that meant I thought I would never be able to exercise again. I’ve tried everything couch 2 5k the most recent and when I ended up getting hurt in week 3 I cried and spiralled into a depression. So when I decided to try the @samaritanscharity #Samarathon2019 26.2 miles walking/jogging/running over the month I wasn’t sure how I would do, but I am loving it! The first walked killed me, the second even harder but over 15 miles in completing my longest walk yet yesterday at over 2 miles I excited to keep going. I only walk, jogging is not on the cards for me but who cares as 1 mile was tough day 1 now not so much. Ash took this picture yesterday on our family walk, the wind was against me, I only slept a few hours but with his encouragement I felt so proud even if there is serious visible belly line. So please set yourself #littlepositivechanges and they will feel HUGE! #happysunday #walkingexercise #beproudofyourself #bettshangercountrypark #supportsmall #kentbloggersuk

With so many people confined at home, everyone’s step count is drastically decreasing, and reaching recommended 10,000 daily steps seems like mission impossible.

If you’re struggling to get there, here’s a couple of helpful tips you can use – even if you’re stuck inside your home all day long.

Other Activities

One of the best ways to increase your step count is walking while you’re completing other tasks. Listening to music, podcasts, and audiobooks, chatting with your friends and family, and scrolling through Instagram are only some of the activities that you can easily do while walking around your room.

Little Breaks

If you work from home, it’s important to take breaks to give your mind and body some time to rest. You can use these breaks to recharge your batteries by doing some light walking around your house.

Getting Out

Don’t limit yourself to simply walking around your room if you have a yard or a garden at home. You can have a nice walk and get some fresh air without getting in contact with people outside your household.

Walking is the simplest and one of the most common types of exercise. The great thing about it is that you don’t need any special equipment besides a pair of comfy shoes. You can do it everywhere, alone or with someone, and it’s generally easy to implement it in your daily life. How do you get the most out of walking?

Walk Every Day

Everyday walks can help you stay in shape and burn calories. It’s best to walk for at least 30 minutes every day if you can or aim for four one-hour long walks per week.

Everything Counts

It’s not necessary to schedule long walks if you want to benefit from walking. Every little thing during the day counts, so start taking the stairs instead of elevators and figure out how to squeeze in more walking in your commute. It could be getting off one stop earlier if you’re using public transport or parking further away if you’re driving.

Get Comfy Shoes

Nothing can be as motivating for walking as a pair of comfortable shoes. Now that sneakers are so trendy, you can even walk to work in them and change into something more appropriate once you get there.

Sitting through your lunch break is the most convenient way to spend it, and perhaps even the required way if you have so much work you can’t move from your computer even during lunch. However, it’s best if you can spend your lunch break walking.

Sitting around all day long is already too much, you definitely don’t need to sit through the lunch break. In fact, you should get moving every time you have a chance. A 30-minute walk around the lunch and a five-minute stroll every hour or so should be the bare minimum during work hours, with more activity in your spare time. As you can assume, most people don’t do this. Constant sitting can have devastating consequences on your health and the time to prevent them is now.

Exercise and movement also make us happier and energetic, so expect to come back from your active lunch break in a better mood and ready to tackle the other half of your workday. In case you can’t get out for lunch for whatever reason, you can compensate by walking at least a part of your commute to and from work.

Everyone knows they should probably be getting more exercise, but that doesn’t mean you have to drop a bunch of money on a gym membership you’ll end up using for the first 2 weeks and then quit.

Instead, you can do something for free that’s really healthy and easy to integrate into your existing routine: walking! Walking is one of the healthiest activities because it isn’t strenuous on your body, which means the risk of injury is low and it’s still great aerobic exercise.

The reason why people don’t walk more is that they feel like they don’t have the time for it. However, it’s actually really easy to start walking more every day. If you live in a big city where you take public transport to work or to meet friends, replace one ride on a bus or train by walking instead!

Another great way to get into the habit of walking more if you don’t live in the city is to try to rely on your car less. If you have stores within a mile of your house, walk there instead of driving! The best way to get the hang of it is by parking your car farther from where you need to go to force yourself to get moving more, and the rest will come naturally.

Regular exercise is crucial for looking and feeling good, especially nowadays when we spend so much time tied to computers and chairs. And before you get overwhelmed by choosing the right activity for your needs (running, lifting, swimming, yoga, etc.), here’s a brief reminder about the benefits you can have from walking only 30 minutes every single day.

Building Muscle Tone

If you thought that walking could never replace the gym, you should know that walking 10,000 steps per day (every day) is as efficient as a “proper” training.

Improving Brain Functions

Whenever you feel down, go out for a walk! Walking improves our mood, raises the endorphin levels and releases stress.

Improving Sight

Those who suffer from ocular hypertension (eye pressure) can benefit from walking a lot. The headaches will be gone, too.

Preventing Heart Diseases
