December is the time of year when most people are making New Year’s resolutions and planning to make some changes in their life. However, in January, most of us realize that we can’t seem to stick to those resolutions, and here are some reasons why that happens.

Unrealistic Resolutions

Most people set goals that are too unrealistic and end up disappointed when they simply can’t accomplish them. The whole point of making New Year’s resolutions is to make some small improvements in your life and feel good about yourself, so make sure that your resolution are realistic.

No Plan

A detailed plan can help you achieve your goals because it will keep you focused and more accountable. For example, if your goal is to exercise more next year, a fitness diary can help you organize your workouts and track your progress.

Doing It Alone

Less Sitting

If you have an office job that makes you sit around all day, make sure to get up and walk more. Even strolling around the office for five minutes every half hour will help you stretch your legs. Alternatively, get a standing desk if you can and stand instead of sitting while you work.

More Water

Drinking plenty of water can do wonders for your whole body. You will feel and look better when you do this so there’s not a single reason to stay dehydrated.

Sharing my story is what healed me… Honesty, vulnerability and showing up as my real self is whats gotten me to this place of real happiness… I suffered with a terrible mental disorder, not even knowing I did for a few years. An eating disorder that I didn’t even realize existed but affects so many of us. I’m not exactly sure how or why mine started in the first place but that no longer matters. But I’m here sharing this because I know I’m not alone… and you aren’t either. In the last 10 years eating disorders have staggered 119% and those who are being affected the most are children under 12. I don’t have all the answers but I do know that as an adult woman who’s almost 30 its my job to set the example for our youth, for my children one day. We take the place of role models, parents, and examples. We are the mirrors that young children strive to be. So if I’m going to do better its for myself of course but its for them. We have a choice and each moment is another opportunity to choose differently, to make a positive change, to see things differently, and to be better versions of who we really are. This is something we can and will overcome. If you are suffering in silence, you are not alone… you are so much more than your body and you deserve to know that. I’m here for you and so many others feel the same. Start slow, share your story, reach out.. each and every one of us is on our own journey and we are not meant to do this alone. It’s easy to make a resolution that we’re going to change something that we don’t like about ourselves when January starts. Most of the time, however, we give up faster than we started, and here’s how to change that.

Set Achievable Goals

If your New Year’s resolution is to exercise more, wishing it is not enough. You need to formulate your wish into a goal, then break it down into smaller, achievable goals. For example, it’s easier to give up when you just vaguely tell yourself that you should be in the gym than when you set a smaller goal of getting out of your house and going to the gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6 p.m. 

Block Time

If your schedule allows it, it’s good to exercise at the same time for the purpose of making a habit. Whether that’s possible or not, it’s important to block the training time in your calendar and give yourself enough time to go to the gym, do the workout, and come back without having to stress about other things you should be doing.

Find Support

Everything is easier when you have someone to support you, so find someone who will work together with you and won’t let you give up.
