]]> With the weather cooling down and the holidays approaching, it’s the perfect time for a statement red lipstick to brighten your look. But how do you pick the right shade of red?

The secret to picking the right shade of red lipstick is understanding your skin tone, the undertones of the lipstick, and how to match them. 

First, you need to understand what is your skin undertone. Are you warm, cool, or neutral? The easiest way to check this is to look at the veins on your arm. If the veins appear more green, then you have a warm undertone. If the veins are blue, your skin has a cool undertone. If you see both colors, your undertone is neutral.

Once you know you’re undertone, you’ll want to look for a red lipstick that matches it. For example, if you have a warm undertone, you’ll want red lipstick that also has a warm undertones. 

Many lipstick brands include information about the color’s undertone on the label. You can check the brand’s website for more information or ask a consultant at the store to help you find a red lipstick with the undertone you are looking for.

Formula

Choosing the right formula is crucial here. Go for matte lipsticks that are less likely to transfer to your mask or smudge all over your face. If you don’t have matte lipsticks, a lip pencil underneath your favorite lipstick will make it stay in place longer.

Technique

There’s a right way to apply lipstick to improve longevity and decrease the chance of smudging. Use a lip balm on your bare lips as a primer that will keep the color in place. When it comes to lipstick, it’s best to put some of it on your finger and press onto the lips instead of applying it straight from the package.
