A U.S. passport used to be the key to the world, once upon a time. However, in COVID times, many countries have been closing their borders to international travel, and severe restrictions have been placed on the countries that Americans are allowed to travel to. We all need to escape sometimes, so here are some potential places to get away to.

Note that whether traveling during the pandemic is responsible or advisable is left at your discretion. All of these locations have restrictions, ranging from required masks to COVID testing. Please check with the countries’ tourism websites for more information.

The Caribbean

Many of our favorite getaways close to home are in the Caribbean Islands. Most of these island paradises are still open to tourism, including Aruba, the Bahamas, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. Grab a drink and relax in the sun on white-sand beaches.

South & Central America

Brazil, Costa Rica, and Mexico are all among the countries in South and Central America that are still opening their borders to Americans. Explore the Amazon in Brazil or the Mayan ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Tourist hotspots like Christ the Redeemer and Chichen Itza will have far less traffic than usual.

Hop across the pond to visit our European neighbors. A number of countries on the Mediterranean are open for travel, including Malta. Ireland and the United Kingdom are also open for travel, but require a 14-day quarantine upon arrival.

The United States

With 49 different states to choose from, go on a road trip, visit friends or family, go see a cultural site that you’ve never seen. While you were in your morning haze drinking your coffee, you’ve probably wondered at one point or another if everyone around the world drinks the same thing as you. While most of the world does consume coffee first thing in the morning, there are so many other unique drinks that people have to start their day. Here is a short list of drinks to make you think this morning.

Naranjilla Juice

Naranjilla is Spanish for bitter or sour orange. This citrus is extremely bitter and is made into juice in many parts of Central and South America. People do sweeten it because of its bitter taste, but it is also delicious, complex, and very healthy.

Yak Butter Tea

Although there has been a small craze in the last few years about putting butter in coffee, people living in the region of the Himalayas have been putting butter in their tea for hundreds of years. Yaks have been commonly available, making them the perfect way to make fermented tea creamier.

Agua Dolce

Another drink reigning from the Central American country of Costa Rica, this drink literally means sweet water. People make it by scraping sugar cane into a cup of boiling water or milk to start their day.

When you travel, whether it’s solo or with a group, the best things to do are usually known by locals. If you don’t know anyone in the place where you’re traveling, that doesn’t mean you can’t meet new people! If you really want to understand the culture and place where you’re staying, meet the local people and have them help you out.

Why?

Locals not only know the city best, but they know the best places to go out to eat, where to get the best drink, and where to dance the night away. Even though you can sometimes get good information online, talking to somewhere who lives there is always the best way to go.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bmq2aAsh1C0/?tagged=prague

How?

If you’re staying at a hostel, make friends with the people at the front desk or other staff members! Most likely they will give you generic recommendations, but if you befriend them they are much more likely to go into the nitty-gritty and tell you the real dirt about the city.

Explore places outside the city center and start talking to people. Even though not everyone you meet will speak English, be patient and you can probably make some new friends and get some good dirt.

South America has so much to offer in culture, food, nature, and more. Each country is so unique has something special to give to the world. If you are looking to venture down south, you have to visit these incredible cities in Latin America.

Cartagena

This Colombian city is so picturesque. The old town of the city was founded in the 16th century and has many cobblestone streets and colorful colonial buildings that are very intriguing. The best part is that there are amazing beaches with gorgeous green and blue waters.

Montevideo

Uruguay’s capital city is really something else. The buildings range from colonial style all the way to neoclassical to art-deco. It has the highest quality of life in all of Latin America, and it is a completely global city. It is also a city on the beach and is very popular for other residents of South America to go there for vacation.

When you’re traveling, making sure you’re getting where you need to go is really important, especially if you’re somewhere new or you don’t know the language. International traveling can be trickier depending on what your phone plan is, so here are some travel savvy tips to make sure you always have your technology under control.

Google Maps

This is such an important tool when you’re traveling! There are so many ways you can use without data, so make sure you’re taking advantage of it! You can download different maps offline so you can use them if you need to get somewhere specific. You can also see your location on the map without data, and if you start a map when you have data and then lose it, the map will continue where to go.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Blz39urgSvE/?tagged=googlemaps

Accommodations and Transit

Downloading apps for hostel world or Airbnb will make your arrival much easier. Also, airplanes apps and local transit apps are good to keep up with your daily and larger travels.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BlxOQCjn0Vs/?tagged=iphoneapps

External Charger

This is such a good investment to make whether you have data during your travels or not. If you’re out for the entire day snapping photos or listening to music, your battery will drain and it’s always better to have full power in case of emergencies.

If you travel to different places in the world, you might find that the etiquette in that country is completely different then what you’re used to. Follow these tips to make sure you always stay polite and respectful when you’re abroad.

Japan and Korea

While you might be used to filling up your own glass at a dinner, if you are in Japan or Korea and out with locals, that is not the way to go. Instead, fill the person’s glass who is sitting next to you and then they will reciprocate.

Middle East

When you are traveling throughout the Middle East, with a few exceptions, know that you will have to cover up. Even though it gets hot there, it is traditional to wear clothes that at least cover your knees, and some historic or ancient sites will not admit you if you are not dressed modestly. The best way to do that is with light fabrics like linen and cotton.

https://www.instagram.com/p/9BtHddvAvZ/?tagged=dressingmodestly

Africa

In most countries in Africa, people eat with their hands. In order to stay respectful, you should do the same. But, make sure you are only eating with your right hand and wash your hands before and after the meal.

Even the best cooks have a hard time with some types of desserts, and these are by far the hardest. If you are ever traveling and you get the chance to try one of these desserts, definitely take the time to sit down and enjoy, because chances are you won’t have the patience to make them for yourself at home.

Baklava

You can find this sticky Middle Eastern sweet in many different countries, but the best ones will usually be sold at any outdoor market. Thin phyllo dough is stuffed with nuts and honey and comes out being an incredibly flavorful, and sometimes overly sweet dessert. But, it is definitely worth it.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bk0DuD6HaA3/?tagged=baklava

Croquembouche

This traditional French wedding cake is made out of dozens of profiteroles, covered with caramel and spun sugar. If you can get your hands on one of these, savor it!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BkvlkskH8MX/?tagged=croquembouche

Baked Alaska

It is tricky to point out where this dessert started, but most people would say it is an American treat. A lot of top restaurants in NYC have actually added this flaming dish that is said to be over 150 years old to their menus, so keep your eyes peeled if you’re in the big apple!

Accommodations and Transit

Downloading apps for hostel world or Airbnb will make your arrival much easier. Also, airplanes apps and local transit apps are good to keep up with your daily and larger travels.

Croquembouche

This traditional French wedding cake is made out of dozens of profiteroles, covered with caramel and spun sugar. If you can get your hands on one of these, savor it!

Baked Alaska

It is tricky to point out where this dessert started, but most people would say it is an American treat. A lot of top restaurants in NYC have actually added this flaming dish that is said to be over 150 years old to their menus, so keep your eyes peeled if you’re in the big apple!
