Usually, when people talk about baking, it’s often referred to as an exact science, with only certain measurements and ingredients allowed. This is a common misconception, and food and bakery scientist, Elana of the food blog, LaniBakes, is proving it wrong. She bakes from scratch and creates incredible combinations in her gorgeous desserts.

Cinnamon Hibiscus Chocolate Cake

We often think of tea when someone mentions hibiscus. Elana has challenged this and added hibiscus to her chocolate cake to give it a floral lift. But she didn’t stop there—she decided it needed some warmth and added some cinnamon to really round out this deliciously unique cake.

Triple Grape Cookies

Although grapes are not combined with any other odd ingredient here, they are used in the dough, the glaze, and the filling, making this cookie one sweet treat. With a beautiful purple-pink color all the way through, these are cookies to admire for more reasons than one.

Strawberry Matcha Cake

A chocolate cake at its base, this cake has much more depth than you might expect. By combining the earthy flavor of matcha with sweet strawberries, the cake is transformed into an unexpectedly light texture full of complimentary flavors.

Pineapple Coconut Gateau Basque

As described on her blog as the “love child of a cookie, a tart, and a cake,” a gateau basque is flaky, delicate, and melts in your mouth. Now imagine that dessert tasting like a piña colada, and you get this interesting and delicious dessert.

When we think of root beer floats we’re instantly transported back to our childhood and enjoying them during the summer with our families. The root beer and vanilla ice cream mix is a classic and it’s one of our favorite ways to cool off on a hot day.

Brown Cow

If you’re a chocolate over vanilla type of person, you have to try Brown Cows which use chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla. Some variations use vanilla ice cream, root beer, and chocolate syrup.

Cola Float

Why not try cola instead of root beer? It has a similar taste and it’s just as fizzy. Cherry cola is a delicious option for an interesting take on the dessert.

Purple Cow

Purple Cows are one of the prettiest root beer float variations and they use grape soda instead of root beer, resulting in a fruity taste. Other fruit sodas you can use are strawberry, pineapple, and lemon-lime.

Hard Root Beer Float

For an adult take on this childhood classic, use an alcoholic root beer like Not Your Father’s.

Boston Cooler

An East Coast drink, Boston Coolers use ginger ale instead of root beer and of course, vanilla ice cream.

Who doesn’t love cupcakes? They’re basically bite-size portions of cake with an overload of yummy frosting. They’re perfect for birthdays and to just put a smile on a loved ones face. Next time you make cupcakes, try something different and use these toppings instead of frosting. They’re super tasty!

Chocolate-Hazelnut Sea Salt

If you can’t get enough chocolate, try this super simple two-ingredient substitute for chocolate frosting. Just stir together 3/4 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread and 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar until it’s smooth. Spread onto some cupcakes and sprinkle with flaky sea salt. The sweet and salty combination is delicious!

Mascarpone-Vanilla Bean

Cream cheese frosting works so well on vanilla and red velvet cupcakes. This lighter, creamier alternative uses Italian mascarpone cheese as the base and all you need to do is stir one cup of mascarpone cheese, 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar, and one teaspoon of pure vanilla paste or extract.

Peanut Butter and Jelly

Turn your favorite childhood treat into a dessert by stirring together one cup creamy peanut butter and 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar. Spread on your cupcakes and top it off with one teaspoon of whisked strawberry or grape jelly.

Did you know that there are some amazing natural ingredients that can help you sweeten your food without having to add sugar or anything artificial? Here are our favorite options.

Fruit

The simplest way to make a dish sweeter is to add ripe fruit like bananas, pears, and pineapple. Such fruits are also rich in fiber which helps slow the sugar absorption in your body and you process them easier than added sugar, even if it’s something natural like honey.

Spices

You can flavor your coffee or dessert using cinnamon, vanilla, or nutmeg whenever you want a subtle sweet taste. It’s best to use plain spices because some brands add sugar to vanilla extract or cinnamon powder.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BkvV-2Xnnna/

Nuts and Seeds

While they don’t necessarily taste sweet, nuts and seeds can help a lot when you want to enhance the flavor of foods without adding sugar. Think of unsweetened peanut butter and how it can add some sweetness to sauces, smoothies, and cakes.

There’s nothing quite like some fresh out of the oven banana bread. It’s super versatile and it can be eaten with almost any meal, breakfast, lunch, or dinner. If you’re ever looking for something to do with those bananas that are almost too brown to eat, you should make banana bread. This is literally the best banana bread we’ve ever had; it’s super moist, chocolaty, and it happens to be a crowd favorite!

Try doubling the recipe, you can always freeze the leftovers (if there are any). We love making this recipe into muffins, which makes the perfect snack.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B5Zr0xfIe1j/

Ingredients:

  • 3 very ripe bananas
  • 1/3 cup melted butter, unsalted or salted
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar (it depends how sweet you like it, but we always use 1/2)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 12 oz bag chocolate chips
  • nuts of your choice
https://www.instagram.com/p/B3vVZ9DF3K0/

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F (175C).
  2. Butter a 4×8 inch loaf pan or skip this step if you’re making muffins.
  3. Mash the bananas in a mixing bowl with a fork until they are smooth and stir in the melted butter.
  4. Mix in the baking soda and salt. Stir the sugar, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix in the flour.
  5. Add the chocolate chips and stir. If you want to add nuts add them in.
  6. Pour the batter into the pan or muffin tins and bake it for 50 min to an hour. The banana bread is done when you can stick a toothpick through the center and it comes out clean.
  7. Remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
  8. Enjoy!

  8. Enjoy!
