Table dressing is the art of decorating a table so that it takes your guests’ breath away. As the place where you will be eating a meal, your table should really shine and provide a topic of conversation. Some of the more elaborate table dressing you may have seen on Instagram or TikTok will cost a lot of money and time, but there are simple adjustments and objects you can use to make your table stand out.

Mirrors

With careful placement, mirrors can make your table dressing look more intricate and complex than it is. Try triangle-shaped mirrored candleholders, spaced at equal intervals along the table. This way, no one is awkwardly catching the eye of another guest in a mirror set at head height, but the glass will reflect all of the ornaments you’ve added to the table, providing another layer of interest and decoration.

Plants

A big bouquet of fresh or dried flowers set in the center of the table helps to draw the eye to the middle of the table. Whatever colors are in this bouquet, reference them in plants and flowers you dot along the table. This will create a sense of a theme, even if you’ve just grabbed any plants you have around the house. If the pots are distracting from your theme, wrap them in simple paper for the duration of the meal.

Ceramics

As well as the plates and crockery, one or two interesting ceramic pieces will add interest to your table dressing. Whether this is in the form of ornate ceramic candlesticks, pretty vases, or small, sculptural pieces, it is a surefire way to make your table dressing look more complex and intricate.
