In a significant move ahead of the NHL’s holiday trade freeze, the New York Rangers have traded forward Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken. In return, the Rangers receive defenseman Will Borgen, along with third- and sixth-round picks in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.

Kaapo Kakko’s Career

Kaapo Kakko, 23, was selected second overall by the Rangers in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Over six seasons with New York, Kakko accumulated 61 goals and 70 assists across 330 regular-season games. He has contributed four goals and ten assists in 30 games this season.

Despite his high draft selection and potential, Kakko’s tenure with the Rangers was marked by inconsistency and frustration. He often found himself shuffled through the lineup, unable to secure a permanent role in the top six. This instability led to periods of dissatisfaction, including healthy scratches that highlighted the strained relationship between the player and the organization. According to USA Today, Kakko himself voiced his frustration with his treatment regarding the trade, stating, “It’s easy to take the young guy and put him out.”

Rangers’ Season

The Rangers, currently experiencing a challenging season with a 15-15-1 record, aim to address both on-ice performance and locker-room dynamics with this trade. By acquiring Will Borgen, a 28-year-old defenseman, they bolster their defensive corps. Borgen has recorded one goal and one assist this season, bringing his career totals to nine goals and 46 assists over 247 regular-season games.

The addition of Borgen is expected to provide depth and experience to the Rangers’ blue line, potentially allowing younger prospects more time to develop within the organization. The inclusion of third- and sixth-round picks in the 2025 draft also offers the Rangers future assets to further their rebuilding efforts.

According to the official NHL news site, numerous teams, such as the Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Dallas Stars, were reportedly in the mix for Kakko, but it was the Kraken who ultimately secured him.

For the Seattle Kraken, acquiring Kakko represents a strategic move to enhance their offensive capabilities. General Manager Ron Francis expressed optimism about Kakko’s potential impact, saying in a statement reported by SportsNet, “Kaapo is a young dynamic forward who brings skill and offense to our club. We’re excited to have him join us.” The Kraken, in their third NHL season, continue to build a competitive roster, and Kakko’s arrival aligns with their long-term vision.

This trade also reflects the Rangers’ response to internal challenges. Recent reports have highlighted locker room discontent and a need for a cultural shift within the team. By moving Kakko, the Rangers signal a commitment to addressing these issues and fostering a more cohesive environment.

As the NHL’s holiday roster freeze approaches, this transaction stands out as a significant move, indicating both teams’ intentions for the remainder of the season. The Rangers aim to rebound from their current slump, while the Kraken look to build momentum with the addition of a young, talented forward.

Kakko is expected to join the Kraken immediately following the holiday break, with anticipation surrounding how he will integrate into Seattle’s lineup. Both organizations and their fan bases will be closely monitoring the outcomes of this trade as the season progresses.
