Italian food nourishes the soul and fills your stomach. While some stews take days to make and some kinds of pasta just minutes, there are a few key ingredients that everyone should have in their pantry to be prepared for any situation.

Canned Tomatoes

Canned tomatoes can be used in several different ways in the Italian kitchen. You can use it as a base in minestrone soup, or make it into a sauce with just a few extra ingredients.  The best kind of canned tomatoes to get are whole peeled tomatoes, which are believed to have more flavor than diced or crushed tomatoes.

Spices

A few key spices in Italian cooking are as follows: oregano, basil, thyme, dried rubbed sage, chili flakes, and bay leaves. These spices are the base of many sauces and soups and should be kept at all times.

Garlic

Garlic, if stored correctly, can last for a long while, which makes it a great ingredient to have on hand.  Cooked in some olive oil with chili flakes and white wine and you have a simple sauce great on pasta.

Pasta

Although it seems obvious, keeping pasta in your pantry is the best Italian security blanket you can have. Whether you have all day to make a sauce or just five minutes, pasta can be dressed down or up as you choose.
